  1. No. Those are NASA tech compared to what I had. lol. They had a leather bag and you just dropped the handset into the empty section. One of them had a WWII date and the other had early '50's but they were otherwise identical models. One of them wouldn't transmit clearly. After I had replaced the internal wiring I identified the problem by swapping out the internal mouthpiece parts of the handset. I replaced the bad one with an identical piece from an old WesternElectric handset. I guess there was a lot of commonality in the technology from those days!
  2. I had some field telephones that I bought at a flea market. Probably very similiar internaly. WWII vintage. The crank provided surge electricity to operate the ringer(s) at the other. Two D-size batteries provided operational power. I'd expect your phone would draw main power from the lines just like a modern phone. That's all I got. Have fun!
  3. If you live in a state that does not register/title the engine it might not be customary. You should have it listed in the purchase and sales paperwork though so you can register the warranty. Good luck!

  6. I would expect a stop to be made if the nav lights were significantly less noticable due to the other onboard illumination. Also if there was so much "light pollution" that it was imparing navigation by other vessels by blinding those operators. There probably isn't a specific reg. or statute on this but hazardous operation could be stretched to fit. Why do you ask? You aren't getting scared of the dark are you? (Kidding !!)
  7. Oh, sorry. I only answerred half the question, didn't I? Hey, divorce is expensive and if you start the process you have to pay all the bills. Let her get it out of her system. Use the cash you'd have spent entertaining her or buying seasonal gifts, to fix/replace that boat. She's got a sugar daddy for now so you really don't need to let her get double dipped. In short I think that problem is going to go away eventually so don't waste any more time worrying about it. Let us know how it turns out. Pictures are always nice! PS: In the mean time try to keep the pounding to a minimum until you know exactly how you are going to resolve that issue.
  8. They might just be surface stress cracks. If he has any skill with resin he should put a coat over the cracks and see if they come back. Then he'll know if he has a real problem or not. If he has a transom problem he's not going to be able to use the boat for a while, especially if he tries to do it himself. Every body I know who started that as a DIY ended up expanding the project and were 'on the beach' for a season or two. I don't know why anyone would ask "Dear Abby" this question. I've read her column for generations (lol) and I've never read anything to indicate that she, or her mother, has ever owned a boat. I'm just saying...

  13. It has this in the disclaimer: ... OPERATORS ... MUST NEVER RELY UPON NAV-QUEST MARINE ROUTE MAPPING CHARTS AND DIRECTIONS TO MAKE THEIR MARINE NAVIGATIONAL DECISIONS. ... So you still need paper NOAA type maps to be 'legal' but that's typical with the other on-line chart sites I've seen. The on-screen map display is easy to get around. Point, click, scroll, drag. Good for planning or desk-tripping.
  14. I gave up watching it years ago. Too much "report" and not enough "forecast." I can look out the window to see what the weather "is" I don't want to wait 30 minutes through 3-4 cycles of the weather in places I'm not going, to hear "If it doesn't rain tomorrow, Thornton's Ferry has a chance of sunshine unless it's cloudy." I'd rather check the newspaper or internet.
  15. I've been thinking about this problem whenever I logged in over the past couple days. Even if you had been able to boost the transmit power of your VHF signal the odds would be against the other boat having similiar VHF performance. This would still have some value in getting out the word if you were in distress but you wouldn't be able to co-ordinate the efforts until they got lots closer. I see where you've accepted Welder's antenna suggestion. Most of what I've read indicates that the higher and better the antenna the better your VHF performance will be. Having said that... It finally clicked what I've been overlooking. VHF is not the only maritime radio band. VHF/Very High frequency is most common and operates in the 30-300 MHz band (I have 'Chapman's' open in front of me). MF/Medium Frequency 300-3000 kHz (3000 kHz = 3MHz). HF/High Frequency 3-30MHz. These numbers really don't mean much to me but an expert will tell you they permit communications out to various maximum distances. Additionally SSB/Single Side Band type hardware offers advantages for signal between 300kHZ-30MHz. Outputs of 150 watts are normal. Where VHF is mostly line-of-sight, signals in these lower bands are reflected off the ionosphere and permit communications well beyond the horizon. This won't help you to reach those VHF base stations but should reach commercial vessels if you need assistance. The downside to these units is the expense. $2000 and up is not unusual. I don't know if your Mexican station license covers this type of gear but you probably know who to ask about that, down there. Good luck!

  17. If there's a legal or practical reason for not laminating the TWIC, try this... Photo-copy the TWIC on a full size piece of paper. Fold it large enough to insert the TWIC into it like a sleeve. Laminate the sleeve so that one end is at the edge and not permanently sealed. Put your TWIC in the sleeve and seal it with any plastic tape. This will probably be better for folks who don't have to actually present the card on a frequent basis. Having the copy on the sleeve makes it obvious to you what the item is and at a quick view might get you by a casual viewing at a gate. Good luck!

  19. One word... PERIPHERALS. You guys aren't finding deadends for the technologies, you are identifying challenges for the engineers. My cheap lap-top can run a second screen. Some processors can operate several, each with a different application or browser running. In time, there could be a system built around a removable core unit that's as physically big or small as you want it to be. Remove it when you tie up to a pier restaraunt, when you go home or when you step up into the liferaft. Just like an XM or Sirius receiver it could be plugged into the boat, your car or a computer docking station for recharging and updating, or just dropped ito your pocket in case you get a call on the way to the porta-potty at the ramp. I still say don't throw out your chart plotter yet. Don't toss out the technology wish list either.

  22. Geepers! You'd think the USCG would be using scramblers by now. I have it on my boat... I understand what people are saying against CNN but I weight the matter in their favor. They weren't in the loop on the drill so they had to go with what they actually knew which is a transmission on an official USCG frequency. Heck, even the FBI and FAA responded after CNN called them about it so I wonder who was in the loop?
