  1. I will be needing to buy some new tires for my 06 Tundra in the next couple of months. I have been less than impressed with the Bridgestones that came on it (no traction, have not worn well despite balancing/rotating every 5,000)so I am looking for input from all of you "experts" out there.

I do most of my driving on streets, so I don't need anything super aggressive but, something that rides well and has some traction on boat ramps would be nice. Also, how many of you have bought online and had them installed locally? Is that a bigger pain than it is worth? Some of the prices are really good.

    Any input appreciated. Thanks!

I put a set of General Grabber HTS on my Avalanche. I could not be happier. I have been in deep snow, mud, and long distance highway. I love the tires. If you go to the Tire Rack web site and look at the reviews this one gets raves. Consumers Reports also listed it last month as a Best Buy.

  2. I went to a fishing show and saw a booth with Maui Jim’s sunglasses. I tried on a pair and liked them. I was shocked at the price. For those that own them:

    1) Are they worth the money?

    2) Do the dealers negotiate? I see cheaper prices online.

Anything that may be helpful…please reply. Especially if you have an online site that sells the REAL thing at discount.

    Thanks

I keep a pair in my race kit. If I'm driving a coupe I use them with the visor up. I think they are great. I probably have 7 pair of boat shades and they are top shelf there as well.

  3. I agree. However, IMO, I believe that prices overall are still too high. I will use Sailfish as an example since I am familiar with their line of boats. Back in 2003, when I was purchasing my first boat, you could have had a Sailfish 266 for about $49k - $51K. I went with a 22ft Sea Pro for $32k. In 2006, I felt the need to upgrade so again, I looked at and purchased 2006 Sailfish 2660 for $70K out the door. That is a $20K price increase in 3 years. If I am not mistaken, the boat show price at Miami this year was $89k. That is another $20K in 4 years (keep in mind prices fell this year). In 2008, someone took ownership of my 2660 without my consent. Therefore, I was in the market again. Fortunately, I was able to get into a Saifish 2860 for a considerable amount less than the Boat Show special of $110K. In 2008, the 2860 Boat Show price was $120K. That is crazy money for a boat under 30ft. In my opinion, all boats under 30ft should not be priced over $100k.

This year's show had a 24 Intrepid for $120K - $140K, depends on options. The 26 Jupiter was $120K with a single engine. Yes, they are top tier boats but the are also setting the price point for middle tier boats as their lower (high) prices look like bargains when compared.

NYBS 26' Sailfish about $73m out the door, 2x150hp. They sold a lot of them.

  4. Here is what I found out: Saturday was the busiest day in memory. 20,000 gate vs 15,000 previous years. There were serious, qualified buyes all over the place. The place was jumping right until the Sunday close.

I was told that the various BC brands sold 61 boats at the show. My friends in other brands had sales and more importantly, serious interest from qualified buyers. The dealers walked away smiling.

  5. Is anyone going to the NY Boat Show?

I just came back. It was very empty. The sq. footage is 25% less than last year and a lot of "names" are missing. That being said. everyone was helpful and willing to give of their time if not cheerful. Kudos to Regulator, Pursuit, Cobalt, and Grady White for turning out in force.

  6. WASHINGTON (Dec. 25) - A Northwest Airlines passenger landing in Detroit on Friday tried to blow up the flight but the explosive device failed, two U.S. national security officials said.

The passenger, who was traveling on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam, was not identified. He was being questioned Friday evening, according to one of the officials, both of whom spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing.

The motive of the Christmas Day attack was not immediately clear.

"He appears to have had some kind of incendiary device he tried to ignite," said one of the U.S. officials.

Northwest Airlines Flight 253 sits on the runway after arriving at Detroit Metropolitan Airport from Amsterdam Friday. (Delta Air Lines and Northwest have merged.)

Authorities initially believed the passenger had set off firecrackers that caused some minor injuries.

Delta Air Lines spokeswoman Susan Elliott said the passenger was subdued immediately. She had no details on the injuries. Delta and Northwest have merged.

One passenger from the flight was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, hospital spokeswoman Tracy Justice said. She didn't know the person's condition, or whether the person was a man or woman. She referred all inquiries to the FBI.

An FBI spokeswoman in Detroit said the incident is being investigated. It came just as the flight, an Airbus 330 carrying 278 passengers, was arriving in Detroit from Amsterdam.

Passenger Syed Jafri, a U.S. citizen who had flown from the United Arab Emirates, said the incident occurred during the plane's descent. Jafri said he was seated three rows behind the passenger and said he saw a glow, and noticed a smoke smell. Then, he said, "a young man behind me jumped on him."

"Next thing you know, there was a lot of panic," he said.

Rich Griffith, a passenger from Pontiac, said he was seated too far in the back to see what had happened. But he said he didn't mind being detained on the plane for several hours. "It's frustrating if you don't want to keep your country safe," he said. "We can't have what's going on everywhere else happening here."

President Barack Obama was notified of the incident and discussed it with security officials, the White House said. It said he is monitoring the situation and receiving regular updates from his vacation spot in Hawaii.

J.P. Karas, 55, of Wyandotte, Mich., said he was driving down a road near the airport and saw a Delta jet at the end of the runway, surrounded by police cars, an ambulance, a bus and some TV trucks.

"I don't ever recall seeing a plane on that runway ever before and I pass by there frequently," he said.

Karas said it was difficult to tell what was going on, but it looked like the front wheel was off the runway.

The Homeland Security Department said passengers may see additional screening measures on domestic and international flights because of the incident.

"We encourage those with future travel plans to stay in touch with their airline and to visit www.tsa.gov for updates," the department said.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has been briefed on the incident and is closely monitoring the situation.

The department encouraged travelers to be observant and aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement officials.

between the crazy lady and the Pope and this I would opine that we had a very Merry Christmas! Bless us all..

  7. The US Powerboat Show at the Navy-Marine Corp Memorial Stadium. 550 Farragut Rd., Annapolis, MD 21401

Now in its 38th year, the United States Powerboat Show, October 15 – 18, 2009, attracts more than 50,000 attendees. The show, the nation’s oldest and largest in-water powerboat exhibition.

    Anyone plan on attending?

I think I'm in. It has been several years.

  8. If you are looking for a really good wide tire for suv and pickup say with 18"+ rims I would go with the Yokohama Sprada Spec-X. I put these on my Suburban and Tundra. Had Goodyears on the Suburban and Pirelli on the Tundra. It was night and day. The Yokohama stopped the wandering, the road noise and the highspeed vibration. I get a little vibration when cold but get a little heat in them and they are the best.

Also check out the ratings @ http://www.tirerack.com/index_w.jsp great comparisons and good feed back from consumers.

    Hope this helps.

Go to Tirerack.com & look at the reviews of the General Grabber

  9. We need to do one in CT to get a permit. I was grandfathered but threw out the paperwork and had to go back to school. Not such a bad thing-there is always something to explore.

I was fortunate to work in NYC. They Hayden Planetarium offers some amazing courses.

I took piloting I & II and Celestial I. Real fun with a sextant in the planetarium and big boat captain as an instructor.

I was a big sailor and all these courses were more than useful. What amazes me is how much I forget if I lay off.

My 2 cents is that operators should re-qualify every 5 years.
