  1. An EPIRB, perhaps. One time at the old place there was a power buy on EPIRB's, and you got a ditch bag along with a couple of other goodies as a free giveaway. Another deal like that would kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
  2. True dat about the negative pressure, but if the seal is broken it's quite evident the bag is no longer waterproof. I do have an Orion container for my flares & smokes, but just because it's called waterproof doesn't mean it is. I left one out in a rain storm once, and it filled up with water. Although it was supposed to be waterproof....it was far from it. Also, my ditch bag floats. A ziplock would probably work OK, but like I said before it's easy to determine if the vacuum seal is intact. I have seen many things stored in ziplocks wick moisture from outside the bag and get saturated if it wasn't sealed properly. I have 3 old flares stored in a vacuum bag in the trunk of my car.....they have been fine for the year I have had them there...I just checked them and the seal is fine. Anyway, I try to take something from this tragedy that may help me if I find myself in a similar situation, and reading about the wet flares made me think of a possible solution.
  3. Chuck Norris sent me an email and told me to join immediately or he'd unleash a series of roundhouse kicks that would create a vacuum sucking the air off the planet, thus destroying all life on earth. It's my effort to save our world.
  4. If he's messing with you, then he opens himself up to the same treatment. Post his email address on every forum you can think of, along with your story. BTW...craigslist won't do diddly for you....they couldn't care less what goes on there. Also, if he actually threatens you with bodily harm over the internet, there is something you can do: http://wiredsafety.org/cyberstalking_haras...s/virginia.html Document it and take it to the local PD and swear a warrant out for his arrest. That should shut him up.
  5. Osprey, I think you don't see a bunch of folks jumping up because it takes someone who is familiar with LE to know both sides of the story. There are dumbasses in all walks of life....it's just that when one is a LEO it usually becomes a well-known fact after a short while. Put a badge and a gun on someone, it tends to put a media spotlight on them as well. While I don't condone or approve of what this particular LEO did, I will have to say that the vast majority of those I have dealt with were fair and not over-bearing. I have familiy who are or have been LEO's...they are the most level-headed and even-tempered amongst my relatives. Remember also that these folks have heard every lie told, and have sometimes become rather cynical as a result. Not all LEO's are as egotistical, power-mongering, and authority-driven as many would like you to believe. If they were, there'd be stuff like this happening hundreds or thousands of times a day....and it would be a media bloodbath.
  6. My name's Tom. I'll turn 50 on my next birthday....looking forward to the party next weekend! I live in the Upstate of SC--too damn far from the coast. Married(Cyndi), with a 10 year-old stepson(Clayton), two cats, three dogs(all worthless....except for the wife and stepson, who indlulge my proclivity for spending way too much money on my boat. I am an outside salesman for a local electrical wholesaler--been in this industry for over 15 years. My hobbies and interests: boating(which mainly consists of working on my boat), fishing, and anything boating & fishing related. Also spending too much time on forums.
  7. That and no brain.....Darwin award candidate, for sure.
  8. Used to be a hardcore THT vet. Not so much now. Other than that, Charlestonfishing.com & Sportfisherman.com
  9. A Zebco 33 spincast on a 5' rod. Easy to learn how to use, and he can catch a pretty big fish without it being destroyed. You may even want to consider a shorter rod....less likely to find the bushes and low branches that way.
  10. So many familiar faces, both current members from the other place, along with some blasts from the past that had chosen to move on. Wiley, glad to have you back at the helm.....and glad you saw fit to take the best of your earlier brainchild and resurrect it in this new forum. I am happy to be here.
  11. One thing I am going to start doing is sealing all my pyrotechnics in vacuum bags before they go in the ditch kit. Not much use for waterlogged flares and smoke signals. Lots to learn from this tragedy....if it can save someone else from the same fate, then those lives lost weren't totally wasted.
  12. I agree with this, but the wheels were part of the old....I am just saying it's time to bring in the new. I've been on the old forum since 2001, and all my wheels came before IB's time. I didn't contribute financially after the buy-out because a for-profit corp does not need my money. When Wiley starts asking for contibutions here, I'll be amongst the first to pony up....mainly because I know he's not doing it for financial gain. Also, because I need some more t-shirts, koozies, and Woody Wax samples..... It comes down to a choice. If you want to keep the wheels, then feel free to do so. I just wanted to voice my opinion. I didn't mean to sound like I was bitchin' about seeing the wheels showing up...but when I did it got me to thinking.
  13. I have noticed that many from Wiley's old forum have started using the Captain's Club Wheels as their avatars. I ain't gonna bust on y'all.....not too bad, anyway.....but why do you want to do this? While I completely understand yearning for the heydays of the old place, I don't think this forum needs to be associated with it. It will stand on it's own. God knows I have enough wheels....mainly because I felt part of a greater whole when Wiley ran the place, and I wanted to contribute in ways other than sharing my paltry boating knowledge and experiences. From what I have seen here, this forum will eclipse THT and bring the best part of what most of us here have come to miss back to life. That said, y'all do what you want to. Speaking for myself, I plan on leaving the wheels where they belong...in the past.
  14. Damn....hadn't been here a whole day yet and I have already double-posted......
  15. Whole lotta things were done wrong on this trip. The captain didn't pay attention to the forecast, he didn't have adequate safety gear on board, and pulled a bonehead maneuver trying to free a stuck anchor. Cumulatively, it cost three men their lives, and the fourth narrowly made it. This should serve as the poster child for what can and will go wrong with taking a smaller boat offshore. Such a waste of life.
  16. My screen name, well, let's just say it's a family secret.....nothing to do with woolly krabs, whole lotta crabs, what no crabs, or any crustacean whatsoever. My boat name....Double Dare II....because I dared myself to buy another boat the last time I sold one, and my wife's middle name is Dare.....the II part is because I had another boat name Double Dare.
  17. Hello from a fellow Carolinian..... Feels like home already.
  18. I suspect he has been "downsized" already. Look for him guarding the fresh doughnuts at the local Krispy Kreme......
  19. You do that and I will lead the charge to have your ass banned........
  20. A friend on another site told me. I won't say who or where.....
  21. I have always enjoyed lively discourse, but it just got plain nasty on a few threads at the other place. Mostly because of the lack of moderation.....I know that isn't a problem we will have here. Good to be here amongst friends....
  22. So much for the resale value since you joined up..... Sorry, Wiley--I couldn't resist. Glad to see so many familiar faces here.
