  1. Thanks, Ken. I'll check all the battery connections. I have all the electronics run off a house battery connected to the starboard motor

with a voltage sensing relay. Could that relay be bad?

I don't think its the relay, the voltage sensor on the outboard should not allow over charging even if it was a direct connect. I would buy a cheap voltage/multi gauge and take a direct reading at the battery and also at the radio.

  2. As we are entering the end of summer in the NE it is time to add fuel stabilizer to your fuel.

Most of us use the boat less often in the fall and with E10 gas it is important to add stabilizer if the gas sits in your tank for more than a month. Yes you want to store the boat with empty/almost tanks but we have are not at that point yet; by adding stabilizer on your next fill the gas remaining in your fuel system will be set for winter.

Most of the gas additives benefits are questionable but stabilizer benefit is clear cut and stabilizer is low cost.

  3. In the coming months ReelBoating will slowly lose any resemblance to boating forums I've created in the past.

Unlike THT which has a format known to encourage rumours and vendor bashing I will be taking a totally different approach and working with the Vendors in helping test and improve their products.

THT might have a ton of visitors but comments from many in the industry are less than favorable.

Now, how are topics too limited? People can certainly comment good and bad here on RB as long as their claims are warranted.

I am thinking now perhaps a few off-topic forums (minus the bikini pix) might do well here. Still open to comments.

I don't think the sand bar is a reason to go to this site.

I would suggest more folders for boat related questions. For example you should have a tab/folder for questions about outboards and a tab for questions about fishing. THT offers a larger number of posts which is why I read it. With time and quality your activity should increase.

  4. I looked for a while for my WC 250DC and everyone who made covers had great recommendations but no one would guarentee a proper fit since it was a cat. I ended up geting a mooring cover made by a local guy and just shrink wrap it for the winter. One of these days I may look for a winter cover but what I have now is perfect for in season use.

I would love to get a winter cover but it seems like high priced custom is the only way. The local canvas guy around here is slow and high priced.

  5. I have a Furuno system but not sure that any one brand is the answer.

My Friend just got a Garmin HD system which is very nice. I think that Garmin tends to cost less than the other brands.

My brother has Raython system with two full size screens which is great.

I think the biggest factor is screen size and the room you have on your boat.

My boat has one big screen and a secondary LCD display that shows numerical information like speed.

Once you know the screen size/screens size then you can start to compare costs.

Another thing to consider is the getting a Auto Pilot and making sure that the GPS and talk to the Auto Pilot and the VHF radio.

If I hit the distress button on my VHF it will provide location from the GPS radio.

  6. My concern is not the quality of the engines from Yammy, Zuki, etc... It is where the money is going...

Yes, I will buy an ETEC made here, but not one made in China... The fact that Evinrude is now farming out part of their production is a warning shot across the bow...

I bought three new suits from a national known men's suit retailer 3 weeks ago... Stopped on Wednesday to have some previously agreed upon alterations done (buttons), the store is empty and a 'for sale sign' out front...

We were in North Fort Meyer in March (chartered an American Tug)... Driving the main business street there, one third of the store fronts are vacant... Next to the marina is a high rise with ~80 balcony apartments... Talking with the locals there, I was told the high rise was a year and a half old and almost empty... That night, I counted 9 apartments with lights on out of ~80...

As I commented on another thread here, a town of 50,000 just 13 miles from blue water with a river running through it, that is world class Walleye fishing, and we have exactly one boat dealer left...

I gotta tell ya guys it is looking grim...

    denny-o

Almost everything is made in China, I would much rather have made in Japan. Sounds like a reason to not by Evinrude, which is not a US company anyway.

  7. I had a 1987 Yamaha Excel for over 20 years and it works great.

I had a issue with the oil float switch and the shift rod had to be replaced. I also had numerous water pump impellers replaced over the years. This work was all performed by pro's.

My neighbor had a boat with stern drives over twenty years he has gone through two engines.

My point is that my cost of ownership is far less than a sterndrive that can be fixed by a shade tree owner.

  8. Our local paper reported today that two boaters from Land O Lakes, Florida (N of Tampa) were found safe by the Coast Guard. The two boaters were in the Bahamas when their 25' boat capsized. Their EPIRB was activated and the Coast Guard dispatched a plane from Miami. They were not located that night and a helo was dispatched the following morning and found the two men clinging to a rock. A nearby pleasure craft was vectored in and made the rescue. The men's condition was not known.

Much better result than from the 4 football players. Not much detail was given, other than they were off Andros.

I question why it took them so long to locate them?

  9. My bet is that the crooks were illegal occupants of the USA, they should investigate and deport them.

If we did this every time illegal aliens would not even think of crime.

I have to say I know a lot of good hard working illegal aliens, and my previous comment was not meant to as attack on all aliens.

  10. Yeah the sad part is that they crooks are probably out on bail. If history repeats itself they will get a slap on the wrist with no jail time.

My bet is that the crooks were illegal occupants of the USA, they should investigate and deport them.

If we did this every time illegal aliens would not even think of crime.
