  1. If you are running 400 rpm then the prop is fine. I do question 9 adults on a boat that size. What number of adults does the rating plate say? You shouldn't be trying to go flat out in rough water. That is just inexperienced operation. Three to four foot waves in a 23 foot boat is pushing the limits of safety under the best of conditions and you were very overloaded, even if all 8 women were 100 lb. beauties! You are very lucky to not have swamped or capsized.

I agree on the safe boaters coarse, Peoples lives are in your hands.

  2. I have a 1998 5.7 liter merc 250 hp, the pvc valves have the hoses which run up to the top of the carb and spark arrestor however there are no connections for the hoses to hook up to? There are two tabs with small appx. 1/2" diameter holes in them that they have the hoses stuck to but i find it hard to believe this is what is supposed to be there, can anyone shed some light on this subject for me?

That sounds right. There are no PCV valves, just the two breather hoses going from the valve cover to the spark arrestor. The hoses attach to metal tubes that are held to the arrestor by the nuts on top usually.

  3. It would also cause a dangerous situation when you are alone on the boat coming into the dock and you have to step away to grab a pole or line. Motor shuts off and you have no steering or reverse to stop the boat. Also, I am a river boater and a lot of the docks I tie up to have a substantial current to deal with. sometimes upwards of 15 knots! You don't want to shut off there that is for shore!

  4. I am not real familiar with the 4 strokes but the main thing you need to watch is weight. As was mentioned if you add more to the rear you should move weight forward. I think the 4 strokes are heavier than the two stroke so you would have to go by weight and not hp rating. When that rating was applied there were no 4 stroke outboards.

  5. I need a little Hour/Minute, 12V, Red Led clock for my little row boat. I fish at night. I need it where I can just glance at it for the time.

We used to make those out of kits some years ago, but have been searching for a couple days now and only find the Micro controller kits and a lot of other marvelous stuff.

I just want that litle simple Red LED clock we used to make for $3 bucks or so. :471_confused_face:

Thudpucker, I know exactly what you are talking about but now that I think about it I have not seen one of those for years. You might try Radio shack or do a Google search for small red led clock. Sounds funny but it may turn up something. If I get time this evening I will try it.

Hell, Why do you need a clock? Sun goes down it is time to fish, sun comes up it is time to go home. :239_fishing:

  6. You'd figure after many years of owning boats I would know better. :1898_: I've been leaving the main water intake valve open for several years. It feeds the live wells and wash down, but unfortunately I haven't been closing it & opening in order to keep it working. Now it's locked. I tried with my foot but only felt the handle flex, so I'm thinking of tapping it with a hammer and then using a 2' pipe over the handle for leverage. I'm concerned that the handle will snap and the valve will get stuck half open. Then I'll have a new can of worms. Any ideas or tricks??

    Thanks. :605_thumbs_up:

You don't want to be forcing the valve while the boat is in the water. It could break off and then your can of worms would float away as the boat went down!!!! You could try tapping lightly on it in each direction and see if you can get any movement. If you do then just work it back and forth a little at a time. Do not use a lot of force.

  7. A son of former Dolphins, Panthers, and Marlins owner H. Wayne Huizenga was sentenced yesterday to two years in state prison in the aftermath of a drunken night out on his boat in Fort Lauderdale.

That sentence, however, is just for violating probation imposed by a previous drunk driving incident, and Robert Ray Huizenga isn't expected to spend much time behind bars thanks to time served credits from the arrest in July and 120 days served in 2006 for a 2003 DUI charge.

But if Huizenga, 48, is convicted of the actual drunken boating charges at an upcoming trial, it will be his fourth drunk driving conviction -- and will carry a penalty of five years in prison.

"I just feel like everybody's so disappointed," he said to Broward Circuit Judge Michele Towbin Singer. "I don't think anyone thought I was going to be in this situation. I don't think I believed that I would. Looking back, I think that maybe I got a little too confident."

Or maybe he got a little too drunk, again. Huizenga was caught violating probation when a Fort Lauderdale woman called police to report burglers were attempting to break into her home. Officers found Huizenga slurring his words and smelling of alcohol behind the wheel of his idling fishing boat.

He refused to submit to an alcohol test and was arrested, while telling police he thought the house was his.

"He was so drunk," said prosecutor Lanie Bandell, "he thought this single-story house [on the other side of the canal] was his big tall house."

A companion, 44-year-old Patrick Stewart, was charged with trespassing and drug possession.

Huizenga's lawyers had argued for a court-imposed rehab stay instead of jail time, but Judge Singer wasn't having it -- seemingly agreeing with Bandell that a "wonderful facility in Maryland will accept him and his money with open arms [after he is released]."

Huizenga's propation was imposed after the 2003 conviction, an incident that left a 71-year-old man bloodied with a concussion and broken elbow.

His father, who built Waste Management, Blockbuster Video, and AutoNation into successful companies in addition to buyithree of South Florida's sports franchises, was present in court

I would bet the outcome would be a little different if were Mr. Average Joe.

  8. Rick, what did you do on your bachelor party? anyone else care to chime in?

I am actually glad I have this video. I can look back at it and smile for years to come. Yes, it may have been a little irresponsible, but atleast it was an innocent good time. We all made it home safe to our wives and familes. No one went to jail or caught any std's. Trust me, I am typically a safe and cautious boater, but sometimes in life you have to live it up.

I know anything can happen on the water, but I know and trust my boat. I have tracked 1000's of miles in similar or worse conditions in this or a similar vessel. I knew exactly how it would respond in those conditions. If I felt like the conditions would have caused a crew member to be ejected from the boat; then I would have modified my speed or heading.

I went snowmobiling on my bachelor party, I was by myself on the sled. I also did not put it on you tube. Perhaps you were sober and your friends were not very drunk. That was not the description you gave about your friends. Maybe nobody was going to get ejected, then again, the guy with the camera damn near fell because he was not hanging on. In 22 years as a first aider I pulled 26 bodies out of the water. 2/3's of those were boating related. One of them was a friends girlfriend and he was paralyzed because of two different people being stupid. He decided to blast down a creek at night doing 75 MPH and never saw the other idiot anchored in the channel with no lights. He went in one side of the cabin cruiser and out the other killing both people on the cruiser and his girlfriend in his boat. I am glad you all got back safe and I am happy for you getting married. You want to have fun, great. Keep the video to look at with your buddies. Don't put it on the internet for all the see and not expect some flack.

  9. I bought a 1983 Bayliner Ciera 2150, it has the Volvo Penta engine and 220 outdrive. When the boat is out of the water the engine will wind up no problem, but when its in the water the engine will not wind up and get on a plane. Does anyone know what might be the issue im having or some ideas i can try? Please Help.

What size and pitch prop are you running?

  10. Am I the only one who has a problem with boaters that like to brag about being stupid on the water? I notice that every other reply in regards to this post, supported what this guy was doing!

The internet is worldwide so basically we are showing all the other boaters in the world that we are idiots!

Yes I did some really stupid things when I was young, picture 1200 supercharged horsepower in a 16 foot boat! I like to think I have gotten smarter as I got older. I was also not endangering other lives in that boat. The big problem I have is the support this guy gets from the rest of the board.

If I am wrong to bring this up just let me know and I will go away.

    Rick

At first I thought you were talking about the story of the guy who ran over a couple of people and was cleared of any charges. It would have fit that thread.

But in this case, while the crew may have been boneheads (friendly but loveable though), the captain made a point of stating he was completely sober. He didn't do anything most of us haven't done while heading offshore fishing. Running a boat at speed in snotty weather isn't always being a foolhardy and wreckless skipper. It might be, but in most cases it's sane and deliberate.

I at least didn't see anything wrong with the post. It was his bachelor party, and he was having a good time.

More power and more speed to him.

Or did I miss your point?

Well yes you did sort of miss my point. Did you see anyone at the controls? He even said it was on autopilot. Would you go out with a bunch of drunks in those conditions on autopilot and not even be sitting at the helm?

    Rick

  12. OK, I'll be the wet blanket here. Very fast, on autopilot in very rough water, one guy not even hanging on and taking video off the stern. Now what if that guy had gone over? How long would it take for you to realize the fact, get it off auto pilot, get turned around? I figure a half mile at best. Rough water like that and you would not have a wake trail to follow back. The guy is drunk, fully clothed in dark clothing and just hit the water at 50 MPH. No chance in hell would you find him. Would you be showing that video then?

Sorry for the let down but I have seen my share of death at the hands of drunk boaters and it reflects on us all.

  13. Use a fuel additive such as Sta-bil or Star-tron.

I prefer Star tron myself, this is added to the gas whenever you fill up and will prevent the gas from breaking down and varnishing up. It is good for several months but I would drain the gas if it is going to sit for more than 6 months.

As another boating season approaches I thought I would throw this topic out there and see if anyone had an answer to my problem. I have a 28' Boston Whaler with twin 200 Yamahas. The engines are older 2 strokes and have carbs. I own a seasonal restaurant and so during the summer my boat sits for long periods. I use it extensively in the Spring and Fall. Last Fall after closing I went to go fishing and had all kinds of problems with the engines. My mechanic pulled the carbs off and took them to his shop for cleaning . The problem was that I was down for several days. I am hoping to avoid this problem . Anyone out there have any possible solutions. Thank you.

  14. WOW.

Has the internet world fallen asleep? Is the ReelBoating POST button broken?

I am working night and day on new ReelBoating features (even product discounts) but wondering if I'm spinning my wheels with the lack of participation here. I can't show off the Forum at the Miami Show with it this quiet here.

I'm not coming down on anyone but did I change something in the design etc that makes it difficult to make or reply to a post?

Perhaps I should have gone the nonsense, bashing, better then thou approach? It's more fun and active anyway ;)

Let me know if I need changes, additions or even subtractions to the ReelBoating site to increase participation.

Dang, a few months ago this place was really crankin. Is the boat biz that bad? Facebook taking all your time? Has everything already been discussed? Is the forum design too advanced?

    :rb-rules: ??

I also visit often but I am more of a watcher. I enjoy the refurb articles. You guys are way ahead of me in the boating world so I really have not much to offer advice wise.

  15. So we got the interior gutted but before we put anything back together we've decided to change the windows on the side of the house to something a little different. I personally hate when people try to put newer hat windows on older hat's, so we decided to do something that was in keeping with the rest of the boats styling but slightly more current. Here are the templates that represent the window profile that we picked...

Did you put it back in the water while working on it?

  16. I think I will remain neutral but I wanted to reply so you knew I was listening. I stopped going to THT because of the raunchiness that was getting worse all the time. When you started this board i jumped right in because it was refreshing to be able to read posts without the usual trash. It started to go that way and I pointed one out and you quashed it. I think if you invite that type of thing back, even in another forum, then it will migrate over. Just my opinion, I do not contribute enough to this forum to be a force one way or the other. I just like clean reading once in a while.

    Ok, so here's the deal.

In 2001 I created a very successful formula for a boating and fishing forum which included the fun side of those activities, jokes, bikini pix etc. It was suggested to me that perhaps this "fun side" shouldn't reside on the forum as it detracts from the serious discussions. These comments prompted me to open TheSandBar.net.

What I now find is... ReelBoating is apparently maybe a bit too strict on-topic and could use some fun (it's my style remember). Off topic discussions encourage a sense of community, inspire new topics, and increase memberships.

TheSandBar may be a bit too removed just having a link here from ReelBoating. In all honesty this yesterday was my first visit to TheSandBar in over 5 days!

    Here's what I'm proposing.

Bring The Sand Bar back to ReelBoating.com as a category with 4-5 sub categories. These categories are somewhat off-topic categories and not necessarily promoting any type of adult oriented discussions.

No adult oriented photos: Bikini pictures maximum - and only those related to the outdoors.

No political discussion of any kind

Funny videos area - non lewd!

Sports area for brackets, discussion, bets during season etc.

The alternative is to leave ReelBoating.com as is and TheSandBar.com as is (with less limitations). The Sand Bar categories will be free to view by all.

    WHAT SAY YE?
