  2. 1/3 rd at normal strike setting leaves more drag at full, probably about 2/3 rds of line strength.

so you would set your maximum full lock up to 1/3 or just where you leave it set while under troll?

in other words, lets say your concerned about being spooled, would 1/3 of line test still be the most, or would you leave some drag available to go up to 1/2 or 2/3 breaking strength?

  3. My McKee Craft came with lead acid batteries in a separate compartment in the center console. It was so difficult to acess them for maintenance/charging that I replaced the the batteries with AGM sealed batteries and added an on-board charging system. No maintenance needed, no gassing odors, and I just plug in an extension cord for battery charging. Oydssey makes the AGM batteries for Sears which is where I bought mine. Good Luck!!

I am considering purchasing a boat that has the batteries located in the stern area of the boat. For weight distribution purposes I would like to move the batteries forward into the walk-in console (which has enough room for the batteries). The console has a head which will be used.

I believe I remember reading on another form, possibly THT, that there were some issues to consider regarding batteries in the console. I am not sure if the issues were safety-related or something relating to upkeep (ex: oxidation). Are there any other considerations I should know about regarding placement of batteries into the walk-in console area?

    Thanks in advance. :1992_beer_cheer:

  5. I have always(30+ years)had a 4 X 2 Explorer or Yukon for towing a 22' Grady or McKee Craft and have never had any problems. A locking rear differential or posi-traction is always good to have. Good Luck!!

I have a trailered 22'Grady that I tow back and forth to nearby launch ramp. I currently have an older (1998) 4wd truck, and I'm getting ready to purchase a new one. I've had a few other trailered boats, all towed with 4wd trucks.

My question is this. Do I really need to get a 4wd truck, or will a 2wd with a locker type rear end be just as good? My main concern is pulling boat up ramp without spinning and not being able to. I have a neighbor with a similar sized boat on trailer that tells me he never has any problem on ramps with his 2wd truck.

I'm thinking that a regular 4wd truck really has only one wheel in the back, and one in the front pulling. With a locker/posi type rear, then you would still have the two wheels pulling, although they are both near or in the water.

I would appreciate anyone with experience using a 2wd truck to pull their boats in and out of ramps, to give me their opinion on them. Thanks, Mike.

  6. I have a Raymarine C120 upon which I installed a Navprotector brand screen protector since it supposedly would provide protection from the elements. The product has been advertised nationally for the intended purpose. I recently removed the Navprotector screen to replace it only to discover what appeared to be a stick adhesive material stuck to the navigation screen. It turns out that this was not an adhesive but the result of product incompatibility with the Raymarine screen.

The only help from the Navprotector company was instructions to use water to remove the residue. This removal process also caused the removal of the anti-glare film coating that was OEM from Raymarine. The screen is now so black that I cannot see the gps chart or the fishfinder. My local Raymarine dealer says that the OEM screen must be replaced at a cost estimated at $ 450. The Navprotector company has refused to even respond to my request for financial assistance. In an earlier e-mail suggesting the use of water to remove the residue, they informed me that I should have been replacing their screen every 60 days!! I could not believe a manufacturer would produce a product of such limited life and so destructive to OEM navigation screens!!! Whatever happened to product testing BEFORE going to market????I have subsequently searched The Hull Truth internet site and discovered that quite a few cases of the same problem have been reported with Raymarine and Furuno equipment. Hence, this is just a warning to all fellow mariners of the problems associated with using the Navprotector brand. Good Luck!!

  7. Last trip out my autopilot blew a 5 amp fuse immediately. Back home, I tried 2 new fuses but immediately blew them as well. The autopilot had been working fine up until this episode. The autopilot is a Ray ST 6002S1 outboard system. The system was installed professionally a little over 2 years ago.

I am looking for any troubleshooting suggestions. Thanks.
