  1. Hi Rich. Good point! I agree. I have a couple of those CG dcecals and they are great What I have tried to address is two points . . . the CG decals do not talk specifically about the radios I have on board and the DSC function . . . and some newbies may find the CG decal too kryptic. Also some people do not know that VHF is one way discussion and not a telephone, PTT My assumption in preparing the note is that something has incapacitated me and that the only help on board is a newbie who has never used a VHF radio . . . this helps me have peace of mind knowing that the info is available for them Again . . . I agree that the CG decals are great
  2. A couple for me as long as you don't change the name to JoeBoating
  3. What I like about this approach is that an instruction like this can be shared because it can be downloaded and printed by anyone . . . and the user can adapt it to their own needs
  4. The following is a sample FAQ that you can use and adapt to your needs. I have produced instructions for users to make Mayday calls on the VHF should something happen to me. I know, I know . . . give them a briefing when they get on board . . . pretend I already did that, please No matter how good the briefing is, will they remember when something goes wrong With the help of a bunch of documents provided by Sam Gardner (aka cuonawv) of the Florida Coast Guard I put together a document which I have since printed and laminated copies for the bridge and salon You can download the document at http://www.4shared.com/file/202505283/58cbf7e2/safety_may_day.html The file name is safety_may_day It is a MS Word document It contains pics and therefore I was unable to post the document as produced Comments and suggestions appreciated Note: The site where the file is stored is free to use . . . not terribly intuitive but never the less very useful . . . I have no affiliation with the site . . . my son and I use it to share large files Wiley . . . I shared this on a few sites because it is so safety oriented . . . however we could make this kind of FAQ a RB feature . . . any thoughts
  5. Woops . . . didn't answer your question I like the FAQs idea because it would respond to questions like "I bent the skeg on my outboard and a small piece broke off, how do I fix it" The only draw back is that each one takes time to produce . . . but I know that many members are more than happy to post their stories complete with pics and video Go for it
  6. Somewhere there is a thread here on RB that discusses it I am working on one right now. Talking to the Coast Guard and then I will "publish" it
  7. I think it would be a great idea to take information from a bunch of posts on a similar topic and put together in FAQs that could be researched . . . kind of like a wikopedia-of-boating-and-fishing
  8. At least no one was seriously injured Too bad about the boat
  9. Sorry but I disagree with your marketing friends My reasoning is . . . JoeThis and JoeThat are trendy because of JoePlumber ReelBoating rings of boating and is a name that will remain in vogue But then, what the heck do I know Good luck with your decision
  10. Wish i lived a lot closer . . . truly admire the work and some of the really smart solutions you have incorporated
  11. The cold weather originates in Siberia and Alaska It is only in transit through Canada on it way to you Nice photoshop
  12. It is ludicrous that someone would call themself Ludicrous However having a birthday is great Thanks for all the great pics
  13. Ran into the above problem by 'midway' but I fixed it What next master?
  14. Jet drives pick up bottom debris and sand and vegetation in very shallow water
  15. While a projects forum may not have tons of threads (because document each project is a lot of work), I would love to somehow find all of the well document threads on projects that were done by RBers One of the celebrities on this site did a number of how-tos on engine maintenance A little birdie told me that a parrot was documenting the construction of a boat that HE was building The forum would have to be real projects, showing the progress of the work, and what was done, before and after I have started documenting the electronics installation on Miss Cecile and when finished I plan to post it here on RB Other projects I have planned for the next 12 months are: - mounting a spot light - mounting a FLIR - mounting a windless, which will include repairing of the deck, a soft spot - installing a rod locker - installing a complete second station in the cockpit - installing cameras in the bilge and lazarette for safety reasons - replacing two condensors, one for the bait freezer and one for the slush tank - a bunch of small cosmetic repairs - LED lighting in cockpit and bridge Well maybe 24 months of projects . . . but that is beside the point This would be a forum where we would show what we have done . . . whereas the boating forum is where we ask questions and hope for answers that solve the issue oh well . . . back to my real world job . . . got to earn some money to pay for the projects
  16. You are right about the outriggers, I will have to check that when I get to the OBX. I would really hate to damage another guy's boat I asked about the teak floor under the generator. During the rebuild they needed some decking and they had that big piece of veneered decking that was scrathed up so they put it there. I get a chuckle each time I look at it.
  17. Was there or will there be a forum specific to describing in detail projects on the boats with lots of pics? I thought that there was a discussion on this a while back. Did I miss something? (again)
  18. This old phart is lost . . . where is this pic used?
  19. UPDATE Hope to be down Virginia Beach middle of next week and continue the trip to OBX . . . of course that is if Mother Nature cooperates
  20. Thanks for all of the great ideas . . . and many different options I am going to get the spot light and temporarily connect it to the batteries I will then hand hold the light at different places to see where I get the best results I also plan to install a FLIR and a video camera (so that while working the cockpit we can see what is directly in front of the boat) Thanks again for all the good ideas Truly appreciate your input
  21. Could you post a pic of your boat . . . sounds like an interesting layout I would have a separate battery for the electronics and one for the engine There is some sort of electronic gizmo that allows both batteries to be charged when the engine is running while at the same time not allowing the electronics to drain the engine's battery when the engine is not running . . . that way your engine battery remains fully charged Sorry, can not remember the name.
