  1. Fifty bucks ain't going to get you much unless you do ebay,as suggested. Daiwa had a bunch of smallish reels that were great. Sealine, Sealine X. maybe a shimano charter special or a tld 15. If you have a change of cash look at the Daiwa saltist I just bought my second one ,the 30. I love these little reels.
  2. I work 4 10's with mondays off. 5 am this morning ,collecting seaclams off the beach. 8:30 am, hammering the codfish (up to 25 lbs) 3:pm trout fishing at a local pond with my 8 yo daughter till about 6:30 for nary a hit.(I used to be good at this). Tomorrow back at those bruiser codfish. monday, back at those bruiser codfish. Gotta get them while the gettin is good.
  3. 10 and 12? Good for you mom. They can find their way home ,3 miles, at that age ,no problem. My kids are 11 and 8. My 11 YO is that far from home ,on foot, frequently. What's the big deal? Now,if she had Dropped them in another town ,or far enough away that they didn't know their way home ,that's another story. I'm not saying that I'd do this,(although that and worse have run through my ,and most parents minds,at times I'm sure.),But I don't see what the big deal is. Maybe they'll think twice before torturing mom like that again.
  4. I'm From Swampscott, I'm fishing out of a 19 Ft. North coast.(Great boat) I commercial fished for groundfish and bass for many years, now pretty sparingly. Not that I don't still love it, the regulations have pretty much stopped me. I still fish most of the bass season commercially and still fish groundfish pretty regularly but mostly rec. groundfish now instead of commercial. The haddock fishing has been stellar this spring by the way. was out Sat. beautifull flat calm day, and my arms are still sore from hauling fish all day. Yes, Awesome site. also glad Wiley decided to give it another go.
  5. Dayum man! Fishin'is darn good where I am,but You got it goin' on up there. I could really get serious about those Halibut. Nice, One of these days. Did you ever decide on,or get a new finder?
  6. I don't think this will work very well for me either. lol
  7. Hmm, doesn't higher octane burn slower ,thus cooler?I don't really know, but this is what I was told by a mechanic.

  9. If it's worth spending the dough on an expensive finder or not really depends on what you plan to do with it and how often you'll use it. If your going to spend alot of time fishing in deep water you can hardly do without one. If your a weekend or three a season kinda guy, fishing mainly shallower water, I wouldn't waste the money. Some species make a finder more necessary than others also. For instance, when I'm codfishing in 60-300 ft. of water I'd probably go home if my finder broke down, you need it that badly, On the other hand when I'm bass fishing in 5-30 ft of water, there are days I don't even bring it with me. don't really need it. I love my Furuno 582L by the way.
  10. So, twice in two years now,I've had my engine in to fix/replace the seals in the lower end . when I change the gear oil it is white and the last time a couple ounces of water came out first. last year I had a guy(marina)replace the seals and three or four trips later I checked and the fluid was white again. I ran it that way for awhile. then brought it to another place (with a far better reputation) and after 2 trips, checked again. white fluid. It was $700 this time. I'm running the boat this way currently. my questions are: am I asking for trouble running the boat this way? And second Is there really any fix for this problem. after taking it in twice and spending well over a grand I'm beginning to lose faith that this can be fixed at all.
  11. Ha, that was a riot. I haven't seen the show. gonna' have to look this one up.
  12. Here's one I have only told to my closest friends. I'm a very seasoned and experienced boater/angler and this is embarrassing, but here goes. It's late fall (NOV?) don't remember exactly, but do remember it was cold. I'm dressed for cold fishing. insulated boots, fleece up and down, heavy coat, heavy pants. I launch my boat solo alot and have figured out that if I hook the painter to my winch, unhitch the boat and back down, hitting the brakes when I want to launch, I can "shoot" the boat off.simple and quick.I've done this many, many times without problems.Well, this time as I'm watching I see the painter snap.Oh sh1t! I slam the truck in park and RUN. Too late, I know I'm screwed, and I'm not about to let the boat get away from me. In I go. waters over my head almost instantly. no biggie ,couple strokes and I get my finger in the bow eye. now the wind and current have got the boat.I can't "swim" it back,so I try to get aboard. I can't! one of my boots gets lost trying. now I'm freezing (the water is cold) and I'm getting tired, I feel like I weigh a million pounds.I work my way to the transom, figuring this will be the easiest place to board. I can't get on! now I'm starting to get a little worried. Attempt after attempt to climb over the transom fail. Now I'm exausted. kicked off the other boot, I'm shivering and feeling heavier all the time. There's nobody around to yell to for help. Damn! Finally,I look at the engine and realize that I have a control on the side to raise and lower. I hit the button, and lower the engine. I'm able to use the lowered engine to climb on and finally board. What a jackass. imaging going out in such a stupid way? lost my cell phone that was in my pocket, a good pair of my favorite boots, and most of all my pride. believe it or not I still went fishing that day. I had a few dry items on board and I wrung out the rest and spent the day fishing, wet, with freakin cold feet. I did learn a few lessons though. I still launch the boat this way ,but you should see the painter.lol a battleship would have a hard time breaking it. Pay attention guys, freak things can happen to anyone.
  13. snotty out there today. your gonna need a bigger boat.
  14. I don't know what they do when they put those things in ,but whatever it is,I haven't been able to duplicate it. I don't know why I still try. They always pop back out,and usually at the most critical part of a fight with a big fish.I've tried heat ,superglue, you name it.fugetaboutit, Replace the guide.
  15. Since cod opened recreationally yesterday. I Decided to go to the bank and look for my 10 fish. It didn't dissapoint.I knew a spot that the commercial guys had been hammering them for months, but I wanted to find some of my own, And maybe some a little bigger. It took awhile, but I finally got on a spot where I had fish 15 ft. high. 10 drops -10 legal fish. Now, if we could get some decent weather.I'm gonna get right back at them. good luck guys.
  16. 2000+ in two weeks must be some kind of record. Is there anyone or anyway to keep track of stuff like this?
  17. Ok, I don't have pics, but here's an absolutely true story that I posted on another site a couple years ago.It was cool enough that I thought it was worth posting again: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't usually post what I caught, but this is an exception.you'll see why. Fairly slow morning on the bank, arrived at 5:00,headed off away from the crowd about 8:30 to deeper water. I start to see what turned out to be a smokin' 6 hour, on and off surface feed.First I've seen this year.I pulled a couple hooks, had a bunch of fish boil on, smash, chase,etc.. the homemade metal I was throwing. clearly saw three fish chasing it on 1 cast. There were some kahuna's mixed in. I saw some that went well over 100. I finally get tight and right away I know I've got a big fish. Fast forward 1 1/2 hours .I hooked this fish at 10:30, it's now noon. My buddy is sitting along side, 10 feet away, in his boat, watching the fight.he knows it's a big fish and he wants to see it.I'm in the bow and the fish is starting to do his circles.I can taste the sushi. My buddy is ordering which steaks he's going get. I look over the gunwale, I can see the fish. All of a sudden I can see something else too. A huge white shadow appears, heading strait for my fish! I think ,Shark! No,it's not going to chase my tuna, you gotta be kidding me! Yup,sure enough,He heads right up and EATS MY FRIGGIN TUNA-- WTF !My buddy yells "hey do you see that, it's a great white! I yell, Yea I know he's got my friggin tuna. This thing was 20' if he was a foot!He was right under my boat and I saw him as clear as I see my feet. I thought, great white before my buddy even said it. POP! game over .I stood there with my jaw dropped,P!ssed and awed at the same time. DID THAT REALLY JUST HAPPEN ? Of all the way's I can think of to lose a big fish this really wasn't one of them. what are the odds?oh well . maybe I can put one in the boat tomorrow.
