  6. After many months of back and forth error reporting between the forum software developer and the forum web host (each blaming each other for issues with the forum), it looks like my perseverance has finally paid off and everything is working fine again. The issue was the software and web server just weren't communicating properly with each other. What you are seeing now is a total reinstall of the forum software, many database fixes, and we're now hosting the site on a reinstalled OS. These fixes caused some downtime over the past 2 weeks and many recent forum threads were lost. Also, after these fixes we made I found over 100 new sign-ups were "stuck" in a validation queue and were not approved by the software to join. This issue (of many) has been corrected. Thank you for your patience. If you had any access issues then please read further. 1) If you were stuck in the validation queue then you were aware you could not attempt to re-register because the software doesn't allow duplicate email addresses when registering. I solved many of these attempts and got close to 100 usernames active. In some cases I had to manually change a registrants email setting to a number @reelboating.com. If this was done to your username you can easily change it back in your forum settings by logging in and opening your user profile. 2) If one of your forum threads/posts was lost it still might be displayed in your user profile! You can try to open and REPLY to your own post to get it to reappear again. You can find your posts by logging in and opening your user profile. OK, Everything is back to working 100%. I'll update if necessary. EVERYONE GO AHEAD AND LOGIN HERE: https://reelboating.com/forums/index.php?/login/ Feel free to contact me if you have any errors. Thanks! Wiley
  7. You have heard these Marine Electronic devices discussed on boating forums. Do you actually know their purpose? ReelBoating will explain the most popular marine electronics. Auto-pilots for boats: The first self-steering gear was introduced in the 1920’s to regulate model luxury yachts. It was not till 1948 that the concept was applied to complete range yachts. Standing at the helm for prolonged periods, keeping track of instruments and maintaining a great look out can be extremely tedious. An autopilot alleviates the helmsman from guiding the right training course leaving him cost-free to maintain a proper watch. Even more, the auto-pilot can be set to either steer a compass program or a course about the wind. A fluxgate compass or electronic wind sign feeds information to a microprocessor which then makes the required rudder motions to return the vessel to it’s needed program. The mechanical power is applied to the rudder by either electrical direct activators, hydraulic pumps or rotating drives. GPS/Chart plotters can be made use of to input navigational directions to the auto-pilot. Battery Chargers: Well, they will certainly keep batteries completely charged thereby extending their working life. Chart Plotters: Usually a chart plotter contains an antenna, mounted high up on the boat, to track GPS signals. GPS will also a screen unit sited either at the at the navigating station or the helm of the vessel. The vessels position is sent out from the antenna to the screen system which consequently reveals it graphically on the chart. The Chart itself will certainly look similar to it’s paper equal. Subsequently, GOS also reveal deepness, land mass, navigational help such as buoys as well as prospective risks in the kind of accidents as well as obstructions. Graph plotters can be connected to drive an auto-pilot and/or send GPS data to a fish finder or radar. They can also user interface with a laptop making it possible for complex passage preparing to be done away from the boat and afterwards entered into the chart plotter after getting to the watercraft. Magnetic Transmitting Compasses: These function like typical compasses utilizing magnets to figure out the vessels positioning to the planet’s magnetic field. Compasses also transmit the boats heading to an electronic screen. They make steering less complicated than with conventional compasses because they present steadier headings as well as do not deal with the “lag” that takes place when making a turn. They can interface with chart plotters, auto-pilots and also radar. Fluxgate Compasses consist of 2 items of conveniently filled magnetic product with coils wound round them in opposing directions. Air Conditioning current is goes through the coils and the material is filled in one direction and afterwards the other. The earth’s magnetic field affects slightly the moment at which saturation happens, previously in one coil as well as later in the other. The distinction is then calculated providing an output proportional to the planet’s electromagnetic field. They are exact to 0.1 of a level. Their output can be displayed digitally to the helmsman or they can user interface with auto-pilots, chart plotters as well as radar. Mirror Sounders: This marine electronic device service the very same principle as finder. A transducer produces a slim beam of high frequency noise. This is reflected by any type of solid items and the time in between transmission as well as invoice of the resemble is gauged. The speed of sound through water is understand therefore the variety or distance to the sea bed can be computed. That is after that shown in meters. Forward Looking Sonar (FLS) enables you to see the undersea hazards prior to you’re actually in addition to them. A regular array for a FLS is 150 meters. Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) The EPIRB is a piece of equipment created to drift devoid of a vessel in distress. It then sends out a radio signal that can be identified by Search as well as Rescue Satellite Assisted Tracking (SARSAT) satellites. They pass on a message to a ground terminal that in turn can prompt a search and rescue operation. Fish Finders: This marine fish finding device makes use of the very same technology as sonar. A slim light beam of high frequency sound is transmitted by a transducer, this is shown by strong objects such as the sea bed. By establishing this innovation fishfinders supply displays that reveal where the fish are and also they can differentiate between lure fish and also bigger varieties Gps (GPS Receivers) This system was originally created for military objectives as well as is possessed and operated by the United States Division of Defense. 24 satellites are prepared in a “coop” around the world, they are positioned as though at any type of put on the earth’s surface a straight line of sight can be established to a minimum of 4 satellites. A repair is obtained by measuring accurately the distance between a satellite and also the GPS receiver at an accurate time. Since the exact setting of the satellite is recognized, these ranges provide setting lines which are converted by a microprocessor within the GPS receiver to read outs of latitude as well as longitude. The log is used to measure the watercrafts speed via the water. A paddle wheel or impeller, placed listed below the waterline is turned by the circulation of water, this creates electric impulses that are fed to a microprocessor that shows both speed as well as distance run. Inverters: On the majority of watercrafts today you will discover domestic equipment of one kind or one more. For aboard enjoyment there are televisions and also stereo systems. With the appeal of graph plotters comes the COMPUTER or laptop. Maintenance commonly requires the use of power tools. Liveaboards may have a washing device, dish washer or microwave. Can take 12v, 24v or 48v supply and transform it to a steady 110 v or 220v Air Conditioning supply. Navtex can probably best be called a continually upgraded telex solution providing navigating as well as weather condition info within specified locations. An on board receiver, tuned to 518kHz, the around the world Navtex regularity, if left switched on will either print out or show the most recent massage therapies sent from a neighborhood terminal. The service is offered approximately 400 miles from the coast. Radar RADAR devices enable you to see what otherwise would certainly be invisible. They provide greatest benefit in the evening and in haze or rainfall and are of certain worth when near to coast or in busy shipping lanes. They contain an antenna as well as a display. The antenna sends out a stream of RF power which is reflected back off hard objects. When this energy is recuperated it is converted to a signal which displayed to the individual. The antenna revolves every couple of seconds, the display continuously determines the direction of the antenna therefore a specific bearing to the target is calculated. The moment is gauged for the energy to be mirrored and so the range of the target is additionally presented. Satellite Phones: These phones consist of an antenna, a modem and also a typical mobile phone. They are powered by an iridium battery. Their range is anywhere covered by in Inmarsat Mini-M satellite. Voice, fax, email and information can be transferred. Satellite TELEVISION needs an antenna as well as of course a tv. Function is readily available within a “footprint” which is based upon EIRP (Effective Isotropic Radiated Power) of a transmitting satellite. The EUTELSAT together with both ASTRA satellites cover Europe. NILESAT as well as the two ARABSATs cover Africa and also the Middle East. Good coverage is likewise readily available in North, Central and also Southern America. SSB Radio has a variety of several thousand miles. You will need an FFC permit, or the comparable in whichever country you intend to run it. Power intake is a consideration. Up to 100 Watts might be needed for transmission. SSB radio requires a number of products of devices. A transceiver with the ability of SSB procedure, An antenna, this have to be 8 meters long and also in method most watercrafts utilize a backstay or shroud for the function having actually fitted the required insulators. An antenna tuner matched to the transceiver design. If you want to send email you will certainly additionally need as well as radio modem as well as computer system. VHF Radio: The power required to transfer is minimal, good to go have the alternative of transmitting on either 1 Watt or 25 Watts as well as the reduced power should be made use of whenever feasible. Unlike telephones that allow you to both talk and listen to at the same time most VHF sets need you to press a transfer switch before chatting. This is known as simplex. Duplex collections are readily available but are much more costly. VHF radio waves travel in straight lines so the aerial must be placed as high as possible, preferably at the masthead. Hope this info was helpful. Please feel free to add or comment
  8. Time to wax your boat? Find boat wax competitors to Woody Wax. Feel free to add your own experiences. The ReelBoating relationship with Woody Wax goes back many years. In fact, They were even my first advertiser back in The Hull Truth days. I have watched their boat care products develop to the point where Woody Wax has arguably become the most popular wax for boats. But, how does Woody Wax stand up to the other boat wax and boat cleaner products of today? Woody Wax products are available through their (somewhat outdated) website however the preferred method of purchase is via Amazon. One issue that seemed to follow Woody Wax around the internet was some confusion and difficulty of their application process. Thankfully Woody Wax added a “how to apply” area on their (again, somewhat outdated) website. http://www.woody-wax.com/how-to-use-woody-wax.php There are many boat wax competitors to Woody Wax. Here are the best wax products for boats: Woody Wax – Developer is a longtime boater Collinite Wax – Great results but requires a process Meguires Wax – Said to be the easiest to use Rejex Wax – High gloss wax Starbrite – Product line specific to marine products PTFE Wax – Car wax works well with boats 3m Wax – The classic favorite wax Collinite gives great results but often needs a top coat, while Meguires is often said to be the simplest application on fiberglass boats The amount of discussion regarding the best boat wax is endless. One should contact each manufacturer to see if they offer free wax samples. Feel free to add your own experiences.
  9. One of the many ReelBoating adventures at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show this year was a sea trial aboard The HammerCat 35. At the helm was Peter Wiersema, Founding Partner at Hammer Yachts & Brokerage. The HammerCat 35 is the first model build by Hammer Yachts. The trial began as we shuttled 15 boat show attendees to a drop-off location off-site. A very friendly gesture on Peter’s part considering the heavy road traffic in the area that day. As the photos show, there was more than enough comfortable space for everyone. Have a great day folks! Throttling out Port Everglades you could feel the thrust of power from the more than adequate twin Mercury 350’s. One would think a boat of this size would beg for more power, but with the unique hull design and lightweight carbon fiber top 700HP was plenty. Seas in Fort Lauderdale were about 2’ that day so we didn’t really get to test any slop. We did manage to plow through some heavier boat wakes and the boat performed well. One thing I particularly noticed was how dry I managed to stay. This was a concern I had with all my camera gear onboard. Taking photos over the gunwales I didn’t even feel a mist of sea spray. I found Peter to be extremely knowledgeable of boat design in general, and more than willing to discuss the HammerCat bow to stern. Peter shares some information below. The HammerCat 35 is the ultimate modern center console power-catamaran, which can be configured as a sport fisher, family boat, dive boat or super yacht tender. We designed the HammerCat 35 specifically for the modern boater: sometimes you want to go fishing, sometimes you want to go diving and you surely want to bring your friends and family: we did not want to build yet another center-console-sport-fish-vessel, our focus was entirely on the experienced boater who will appreciate the HammerCat’s exceptional design and build features: Fuel and operating cost make boating expensive: our hull design and construction technique are unique which results in exceptional fuel economy and range. Other power catamarans use a “quad engine” set up on their similar sized models and they weight up to 14,000 Lbs. The HammerCat 35 is build out of epoxy with vacuum fused e-glass, resulting in the “wet weight” of the HammerCat 35 at 8,500 Lbs. This means that we can use half the horsepower compared to our competition and still get the same performance, yet ensuring the strength and durability by using epoxy. With twin 350 HP engines, and 400 Gallons of fuel the range is >600m at 25 mph+. If needed, the HammerCat 35 can plane on one 350HP engine. Should you be way offshore, and one engine fails, you can come back at a decent speed. Top speed with twin 350’s is >50 mph. Bigger engines will give more top end speed. The HammerCat 35 is unsinkable: 43 cubic feet of XPS foam ensures that the HammerCat 35 will remain afloat if you hit a container / underwater object. The hardtop of the HammerCat 35 measures 10’ x 12’ and weights just 150 Lbs., so there is no weight high up which can influence the ride in offshore conditions. The hardtop is much larger & wider than on most other center consoles so you and your crew are protected from the sun / elements. The HammerCat is built for longevity using construction techniques normally only seen on offshore racing yachts. Epoxy has three to five times the flexural strength of polyester/ vinylester resins making the HammerCat stronger, more durable, lighter and thus more agile, seaworthy, fuel-efficient and more fun to drive. Epoxy resin is 25 percent stronger than the polyester resin used in most boatbuilding, with higher elongation properties for greater durability. The construction methods and materials employed by Hammer Yachts create stronger, yet lighter hulls that require less horsepower than the competitors and enjoy far better fuel efficiency getting up to twice the miles per gallon of similar boats at speeds of 25-50 mph. The HammerCat 35 has classic timeless lines with her Carolina bow, flared hull and great curves.
  10. Put in your photo requests. Considering doing a live stream.
  11. WOW, 20 years ago! The boating forum was the Twitter of the times!
