I am considering an aluminum boat for pleasure.

Lots of aluminum boats up north (Washington State, Canada, and Alaska.) Suspect the reason is more for bouncing off rocks than anything.

Thickness of plate matters, to a degree; as does alloy (again to a degree.) Thicker is better in most cases (until weight starts becoming a factor), and 5000 series alloy is preferable to others (again depending on price point and intended use.) Keep it well anoded (zinc in salt water, magnesium in fresh/brackish), pay attention to dissimilar metal corrosion (stainless fasteners should have corrosion inhibitor applied, for example) and it should last forever (barring impact damage.)

Luck;

jky
