Evinrude question

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and am in the process of buying my first outboard CC fishing boat. I currently have a 2005 27 ft chaparral for the wife and family to cruise with but I am feeling the need to fish so I have a down payment on a 1998 palm beach with a 98 evinrude. The carbs were rebuilt and the powerhead was also rebuilt with a 1990 powerhead. Does that sound right. It sounds strange to me that this CC is a 1998 boat and the outboard was a 1998 with a 1990 powerhead. I must admit I have never owned an outboard motor in my life so I don't know jack about them. I am going to have the compression checked which supposed to be 140 in all the cylinders. I actually thought that was kind of high. I guess I should mention that the boat and trailer(just ok shape) is $3000 Any and all input on the motor issue and Evinrude would be appreciated. Good luck to anyone that went through this storm.

A 1990 powerhead is a different block design than your original '98 powerhead. OMC redesigned the big block 3.0L engines in 1993 and improved other items and introduced them as the Ocean Pro and Ocean Runner models.

Have an experienced tech check over your powerhead to see if it was a jury-rigged replacement or if it is not what was represented to you.
