Wasn't this thing supposed to "compete" with the Airbus 380 - Airbus going bigger and longer-haul, and Boeing saying smaller and short-haul was the way to go?

I have. Quantas - one engine. Looks like an oil problem. The other carriers are still flying though, and I suspect the Quantas planes will be up within the week.

Meanwhile the Dreamliner is still... well, a dream.

It is an acronym not a word, thus it doesn't need the U. Oh and looks like the A380's will be grounded for a while longer yet. They have all been removed from the summer schedules.

On the local Sydney news tonight they said the QANTAS A380's will be out of service for at least another 2 weeks and possibly longer.
