Bimini Trip How much oil?

Recommended Posts

Hmmmm....tough to tell how much you will need. I guess first you need to know what the gas to oil ratio is then estimate how much gas you think you are going to burn.

To give you an idea on one of my trips last year I drove a total of 237 miles, burned 140 gallons of gas and 2 gallons of oil.

You will no doubt burn more gas and oil being there for a week. Hell bring like 10 gallons, its not like it will go to waste.

Chris, that's like 70 to 1 on the oil ? I thought you ran 100:1 .

Yes, that works out to 70:1. I run the XD50 oil not the XD100. Thats another misconception about the E-Tec oils. the XD50 doesn't mean it burns at 50:1 and the XD100 doesn't mean it burns at 100:1.

The XD50 means its 50% synthetic and the XD100 is 100% synthetic. When the engine is running XD100 it will burn less oil. The E-Tecs don't oil like a traditional oil injection outboard. A traditional oil injection will pump the oil in at a set rate regardless of speed or load, for example 50:1.

The E-Tecs inject oil based on the load of the engine. So a boat with the same engines as mine and running the same oil as mine may burn more or less oil depending on the weight and hull design of the boat.

So on that trip I posted the stats for I was at cruise speed for about 80% of the trip. While at cruise speed when the boat is heavy it probably burns at around 50:1. But at idle speed they might burn at 100:1 or even higher. At WOT it might even burn more than 50:1. That 70:1 is an average of the entire trip.

Just for information purposes...How much does XD 50 and XD 100 oil cost you?

The prices vary in different locations and dealers. I get my oil at Dusky Sport Center in Daina FL and I pay $18.99 a gallon for XD50. And thats factory sealed jugs, not refilled bulk by the dealer.

I havent look at the XD100 price is a while but its usually 8-10 bucks a gallon more. But it also burns slower so it works out to be about the same.

I only buy 2 gallons of oil once about every 2-3 months for my normal boating. Where I live I have a good amount of idle speed to get in and out, then once out of the canal everything is pretty close so I use hardly any oil. I of course use more during the summer months when I am making runs to the Bahamas.

I guess we're ready for a Bahama crossing, we did 170 miles in a day a few weeks ago, headed out Lake Worth Inlet, oceanside to Port St. Lucie / stuart Inlet and took the ICW north past Sebastian Inlet Capt Hariam's for lunch.
