Hub temperatures?

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the tip on the guns guys.

With the superlube hubs you need to rotate the wheel while you are pumping very slowly. This pushes the grease through all sides of the bearing. Otherwise most of the new grease just goes through one side of the bearing. Go slow so you don't buildup too much pressure.

Did the SWFL to MA run 2 weeks ago in all that heat. Trailering a heavy 24 footer on a tandem trailer with brakes on all 4 wheels. All 4 were consistently within 10 degrees of each other and 20 to 30 degrees above ambient temp at each gas stop. For instance, in GA at 103 degrees outside they were all between 125 and 135 on the gun. And before the trip the brakes/ hubs were all serviced with new brake cylinders, re-packs, etc. I put grease in each about every 500 miles though I'm not sure they really needed it. Good luck and have a safe trip!

I'm a big believer in non-contact thermometer's (some call then' laser' but laser only shows you what you are pointing at.

I tend to look for deviations from the norm rather a specific temp. I routinely check my tire temps and hubs at rest areas (both motor coach and trailer).

The heat sensor detects heat similiar to a pointed ice cream cone. The closer the gun the smaller the area checked.

The gun is also great for checking radiators, refrigerators, air flow on a/c's etc.

I gave one to a friend who in turn used it on his wife. Big mistake when he reported the results around the campfire. :605_thumbs_up:

Thanks for all of the replies. I got back from Florida on monday, the trailer did fine. The temps ranged any where from about 103 to 145 degree's, during heavy traffic i had the brake hubs reach 185 degrees. I did notice wear on the inside of each tire the pressure was correct, the wheels balanced and the boat loaded correctly. Other than that no issues. Thanks again for the replies.

Stupid question but, what else would one use a temperature gun for? I love gizmos and gadgets so if there are other uses, please share.

You can use it to help find heat/cooling leaks around windows at home. I have also used them for trouble shooting a plugged radiator. Many different uses.
