Offshore Fishing ...... 21 foot Dual Console

Been fishing my 210 Whaler Ventura offshore for the last eight years (3100 hours of offshore fishing to be exact). My mind set has been I didn't need outriggers. I've had no problem catching fish on flatlines, downriggers, hard baits, and pitch baits etc.

This year for my birthday my 1st and only mate gave me 15 foot telescoping Taco Outriggers. After some thought I installed them using gunnel mounts. It really adds a new dynamic to my spread for sure, in as much as I can control my baits and numbers of rods I can fish.

Here's my plan .... please chime in with ideas. I thought about fishing two rods per outrigger but decided to try one to see how it goes. On the trip to and from my offshore I plan to run with the outriggers collapsed.

Here are some pictures.

Running position ......

Plan A ...... teaser rods will be deployed one at a time .....

I've got some starboard wedges being cut when they come in I'll replace the PCV board ones.

Sinking Boat

So - hanging out at Peanut Island Sunday when a 17' something or other comes flying in really low in the water. Ran up on the beach as far as she could. Turns out that the boat had a leak (owner knew about it) and the bilge pump wasn't working. Myself and a few other guys assisted in trimming the motor down to the sand (so it wouldn't go under) as he had trimmed it up all the way trying to beach. We then lifted the bow up to get most of the water out. The owner pulled his keg to the beach and decided to stay. I guess there wasn't much else he could do.

Questions - have you or would you ever risk running a boat without testing your bilge pump?
Do you test your bilge pumps prior to getting under way?
Would you run a boat with a slow leak with a working bilge pump?

Lowrance Sirius Satellite Weather Module

This is very cool.

While I was at Marco Island a couple of weeks ago I installed my new Lowrance Sirius Satellite Weather Module --

http://www.lowrance.com/Products/Marine/....tworking/LWX-1/

which overlays satellite weather radar data onto the HDS-7 GPS chartplotter, which is also new to me--

http://www.lowrance.com/Products/Marine/....S-Chartplotter/

This is really an awesome system. The HDS-7 itself is really cool, very user friendly with good charts already installed, but adding the weather module gives you a ton of additional info which is very useful such as wind speed & direction, water temps AND weather radar.

The weather radar shows T-storms with an icon that also has an arrow showing the direction it is moving.

Allows you to set alarms for T-Storms and lightning. Had mine set at 6 miles and it worked great--especially when the forecast calls for dodging thunderstorms every day.

A lot of you guys probably already have a newer system similar to this on your boats, however I had not bought any new marine electronics in a LONG time, and all I can say is......WOW!

GARMIN Colorado 400C GPS

I sold my boat and joined a boat club, so I wanted a portable GPS. I bought a Garmin Colorado 400C that has the coastal charts, but can't find any step-by-step instructions how to use the GPS charts to find position (markers show without numbers unless I place cursor on them) or set course to a position shown or entered on the GPS. I have not used a marine GPS previously. The Garmin manual is little help. I bought the Bennett video - also no direct help on the chart usage. The YouTube videos - no help either. I may figure it out sooner or later, but would like some "For Dummies" level instructions. Any suggestions?

Did anything change in some of the tooling on the GB..meaning have the boats gone over a big redesign..small bottom changes or blueprinting..stuff like that or are they the same with WC behind them..
