  1. Lots of aluminum boats up north (Washington State, Canada, and Alaska.) Suspect the reason is more for bouncing off rocks than anything. Thickness of plate matters, to a degree; as does alloy (again to a degree.) Thicker is better in most cases (until weight starts becoming a factor), and 5000 series alloy is preferable to others (again depending on price point and intended use.) Keep it well anoded (zinc in salt water, magnesium in fresh/brackish), pay attention to dissimilar metal corrosion (stainless fasteners should have corrosion inhibitor applied, for example) and it should last forever (barring impact damage.)
