  1. Not true most boats this size use a 240 VAC genset . and most marinas have offer 50 amp service at the dock and that are also 240 volts. Just like your house has 240 v coming in . ( your home dryer and oven would use 240 volts but the rest of your house is 120v . its the same thing on a boat . you use 240 to run your AC units maybe hot water etc. then use 120 for most other uses . How do your get 120 from 240 ? on a 240 set up you basically have a neutral and 2 120 volt sides giving you 240 volts so you use that to run your 240 volt stuff . your then take and use the neutral and one side to run to get 120 volts and do the same to get 120 volts with the other side . Just like its done in your home.
  2. Your going to see someone say cummins are better on fuel and and some one say Cat is and so on. the fact is all engines will be real close . Lets say it takes 600 hp to move your new hull at 20 knots . it will take x amount of fuel for a Cummins to make that 600 hp . It will take the same amount for a Cat to make that same power . there maybe a very slight difference But nothing significant. how you run them is the big factor on fuel burn
  3. Hey I think we both have nice boats you got your tin and I have my plastic ( I bashed my self so its cool) think about how boring it would be if all boat were the same. My first boat was alum. and thats what got me started so it can't be too bad as I have been hooked ever since
  4. Most likley 240 volt is what you will need 8k ? depending what your needs are 2 or 3 a/c units washer dryer etc. I Like northern lights myself also Westerbeke is high on the list .A 1800 rpm unit is a must IMO . other good units out there these seem to be the best from what I have seen .I wn a Northerlights myself . is this a new build ?
  5. Cummins would be my first choice ,cats and older Detroit's are OK IMO . no fan of Volvo or Mann and MTU do to cost of repair and service. you did not say what age your looking at so you choices maybe limited , different makes may offer different option's on engines , limiting you choices I like ZF gears myself , But most others are good and if buying a used boat or even new you may not have a choice .I don't know of any that would be used in this size range boat I would run from . what boats and age brackets are you looking at ? Are you even thinking of a glass boat ??
  6. Thanks for the link , I found it interesting I more I read the more I know glass boats are still for me . different boats for different folks
  7. " ] If you damage it [ Alloy ] just weld in a new piece grind/sand smooth and buff or paint , with a open mid it's a lot easier to work on than a glass or wood boat. Typically Alloy boats are painted above the water line and raw below. " Once you weld and patch It will not look that great unless its painted , do you really think its easier to weld and patch then to do a repair in glass or even wood ? It takes a good welder to do that type of work not the average boat owner . Alloy boats have their pros and cons like any other boat
  8. I worry about them in the salt , can't use reg bottom paint , don't ride as well , noisy ( goes for steel as well) what if you do damage it ? how do you make it look good ? easy on wood or glass even steel as its painted . maybe a great boat for some but not for me
  9. I have had them all Wood, glass , Alloy and steel . Glass is my first choice by far
  10. throw away the wing nuts and put real nuts on the battery
  11. Maybe if MD had a short season like Va there would be more fish ?
  12. The web site would have offer a lot to have a fee , and would expect fee based site to be free of spam
