  1. lots of good info on this site:http://forums.bateau2.com/viewforum.php?f=10 I rebuilt my transom 6 years ago using these methods:http://gallery.bateau2.com/thumbnails.php?album=696 By the way this Wellcraft will be up for sale in the coming weeks. It was replaced by a 34" Mainship and i don't have time for 2 boats.
  2. You need 3 things for the engine to start. #1 It has to crank over at a decent speed. This should make cylinder compression above 100 psi. You can check this with a simple compression gage from an auto parts store or Harbor Freight. #2 You need fuel to make it into the cylinder in the right amount. When you primed it it may have soaked the spark plugs which basicly shorts them to ground. Pull a couple plugs and make sure they are not drenched. If they are pull all the plugs and spin the engine over. This will blow the excess fuel out of the cylinders. Let the plugs air dry or blow them off with compressed air if you have it. #3 You need spark. Pull the coil wire out of the distributor cap and hold it a 1/4 inch away from the engine block ( MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO FUEL VAPORS PRESENT FIRST ) have someone crank the engine it should jump a bright spark. If this happens plug the coil wire back in and remove one of the spark plug wires and repeat. If you have spark here also the distributor may be timed 180 degrees out. Do these steps and let me know what you find. I will try to guide you further when i get more info. Good Luck. Lets get that boat in the water before summers over.
  3. It would help to know what kind of setup you're talking about. Assuming Mercruiser, I'd say it's Ok. The tubes job is to get the exhaust gases directed thru the prop hub to help in starting from a dead stop. It aeroates the prop to let the rpms come up a bit. The early engines used an exhaust boot. It was discovered that V8 engines would cause the boot to swell and get abraided and fail. Thus the tube was introduced. Hope this helps.
  4. I'm with VeroWing on this one. I am trying to post a link, but it doesn't seem to be working. Cut and paste. http://forums.bateau2.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=16991&hilit=transom+time+has+come This repair was done 2 years ago and I'm convinced it was the right choice. http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/userpics/18605/128.jpg
  5. I think they should drop the size limit and just say keep the first x number of snappers caught. As Larry points out the cudas get them on the way down. I have been diving at the rigs when boats come up and drop lines to bottom fish. I'll be hanging out at 20' doing my deco. Every time they throw a fish back in. There a several cudas waiting. Several lightning quick pass's and the fish disappear in a cloud of pink water and scales. Awesome sight but counter productive for the purpose of conservation.
  6. By yourself, very impressive. I did my Wellcraft Offshore 248 2 summers ago, but I had lots of help. http://gallery.bateau2.com/index.php?cat=18605 Bateau was an invaluable resource as well as great prices on materials. One question, have you been infected by the epoxy? I suffered post project withdrawal symptoms after completion. I had to build one of their plans last winter. I am already drooling over plans for the next build.
  7. 70' Barracuda Gran Coupe 440 HP 4sd pistol shifter......... lucky to have survived adolescence.
  8. I probably made about $25.00 an hour if you don't count ponder time. I work in an auto repair shop obviously. I could make more fixing cars on the side, but its not "fun" anymore. I just have to stay busy or I get crazy. Summer is great, diving and fishing and such. The winter sucks and I need something to do. Good luck with your endeavor, it will be hard to make it. Under promise and over deliver that is the key. If you hustle and give it your all you will succeed. Word of mouth is going to be the most important advertising you can get.
  9. I've rewired a couple boats during the off seasons. Didn't get rich, but it kept me out of the wife's way. Last winter I built a stitch and glue row boat. It was more satisfying.
  10. Seems so. I will not do anything about it till after the season ends anyway. I know that when the display says 1U it's really saying 10.
  11. "I didn't take your handle" is most likely right. I have an 82' Wellcraft Offshore 248. It's a great boat, but ....... It took awhile to get there. Most of the boats built in the 80's used poor quality plywood in the transom. Add transducers, swim platforms, trim tabs and so on you get lots of water soaking into the core. Who would have thought a fool would keep using a boat that was 25 + years old. They wanted to sell you a new one once in a while. I bet a lot of boats built in 2000's wont' be around that long. Anyway see my tribulations. http://gallery.bateau2.com/thumbnails.php?...=696&page=1
  12. I finally got my trimdicators installed over the winter. On my second trip this year I noticed the top segment has died on one of the displays. Hoping you can help.
  13. I wouldn't suggest burning it it a newer car, ie 90's on up.
  14. I always call the wrecker service our shop uses. He'll burn anything. It gets me a free tow once in a while to boot.
  15. We used the old steel beer cans for tennis ball mortars. Juice it with rubbing alcohol and light it. We'd sit out at the football field and see if we could hit each other. Never happened. Anyway I guess I'll be cleaning the soffit vents and replacing the trashed ones. I should clean the fish tank too........
