I moved the batteries to the center console because the Sears PM-1 AGM's I wanted to install wouldn't fit in the transom lockers. I added a BEP Cluster w/ VSR and a ProMariner ProTournament 100 charger at the same time everything was installed. Trailer brakes were just replaced along with wheel bearings and the tires were rotated and balanced. Full custom made cover which extends down past the colored gelcoat. 2. I was reading in Passagmaker magazine last month about guys making their own Diesel Duck trawlers in a mere 10,000 hours. That's alot of nights and weekends. I think I'll stick with the smaller projects.
  3. I bought a new to me boat just before Christmas (2008 Sea Pro 228) and have been spending the last few weekends doing some projects. So far I removed the wet cell batteries and added new Sear PM-1 AGM batteries and relocated them from the transom to the console. I installed a Garmin 4210, GSD-22 sounder, Airmar B-60 thru-hull and a Fusion IP-600 stereo and four speakers. The boat had two batteries but they were not wired properly which prompted me to install a BEP battery switch with VSR and was part of the decision to move the batteries. I'm not done yet but got a lot done so far. The boat This is where the start battery was. It was a mess. New Garmin 4210 and Fusion remote control Left the Humminbird 97 where it was for now and made a mount for the fusion and VHF. Mounted the new GPS antenna inside the console for now, as I need a new canvas top so I'll mount it up there after it's replaced. of course the wires need cleaned up. Still working on the console, I'll post more when it looks neat.
  4. I bought myself a new to me boat for Christmas. I managed three and a half months boatless and couldn't stand it. Working on electronics now.

  6. I received the two deluxe auto-inflate models I ordered at my door today. Looks like a nice and well built product. I have a couple of the fanny pack style as well that I found on a clearance deal a few years ago. I think I prefer the fanny pack for nice weather days, but this suspender style is bound to be the better option for rough days or when a storm pops up on you. It feels really secure and is instantly good to go unlike the fanny packs.
  7. Thanks for info. I just ordered a couple. I've been waiting to find some on clearance from somewhere.
  8. Thanks for the advice and thanks for tweaking your site, made my fishfinder search easier. Looked at the site you suggested, looks like he's done some pretty cool stuff.
  9. I have a Garmin 498 GPS/fishfinder but I thought about adding a small second fishfinder to help out when navigating to my grouper holes. It's kind of a pain to look at the small split screen and then toggle between control of the GPS and sounder when I need to really see both screens to narrow in on the big fish. I have limited dash space so I would be considering one of the really low end small units. My question is, if I add a second transom mount transducer, is the drag from it going to affect fuel economy and am I going to experience any interference issues from having two transducers firing? Also, does anyone have a source for plastic that I can use to help cover over the holes when I move and remount my existing 498. Thanks for any feedback.
  10. Did you fill the fuel filter with gas before attaching it? If not, that may help. It could be that your using the gas in the fuel line but the pump on your motor can pull the fuel from the tank into the empty fuel filter and it's stalling out, but that's just a guess.
  11. I had several of them circle my boat last summer while I was bottom fishing and tried everything I had to get them to take a bite. A couple of these were huge and I tried everything without luck. I think they just must be super finicky. I did not have any live fish in the livewell to try however so that might have made a difference.
  12. This threads a few weeks old but I thought I'd add my 2 cents. Lithium batteries do have a much longer charged shelf life but they still need to be used and drained down and then recharged. Leaving any battery on a charger full time will cook the battery over time but the cheaper the charger the quicker that happens. Smart chargers will fast charge a battery to full power and then go to a trickle charge mode. If the radio is off, this charge exceeds the natural drain of the battery and will slowly overcharge it. Also, do not let a lithium battery sit fully discharged for very long(and I mean a few weeks) or you will never get it charged again. I'm a radio guy and buy a couple hundred portable radio batteries a year for my job and have more experience with that than I care to have. The batteries that tend to last the longest are the ones that are used and charged every single day regardless of type. The other plus to lithiums are that they tend to pack more power than other styles but they have some major drawbacks to me as at some point they just won't take a charge anymore. With other types they just don't last as long once they get some age on them. The problem with using AA battery trays in a handheld is that they usually don't supply enough power to produce more than one or two watts on transmit and will drain very quick if you do alot of transmitting. To me the best bet would be to have a lithium battery that you maintain by discharging and recharging once a month or so and then to have a AA battery tray with some Lithium AA batteries on hand. I have an Icom M1V with a lithium battery that I take good care of and it finally gave up the ghost after four years which is pretty good. But in it's prime, I could leave it on for two days straight just monitoring things and it would still have juice left in it. You won't get that from Nicads. Unfortunately they don't sell battery trays for all that many of the higher end handhelds as they want to sell you $80 lithium batteries. Sorry for the long post but I hope this is informative.
  13. Knock on wood, but mine has worked great for almost two years. Sorry to hear of your troubles. I have not had good luck with Garmin Nuvi's (car mount GPS)however and made me wonder about the quality of Garmin products.
  14. My tank is a twelve gallon one and is connected to basically a shower head sprayer on a long hose. I use it for rinsing the kids off after swimming and I usually rinse all my tackle and rods off when fishing. I've never run it empty while using it, I think I could run it continually for ten minutes or more on this tank. Since my boat is just an open bow rider style having water is not crucial for running anything, so running out doesn't matter and no gauge is needed. I do keep the tank clean and add a little bleach in the spring and run a few tanks of water through it. That way if I ever got stranded off shore I would have water on board that was drinkable if needed.
