Hi Wiley, I like your idea of a plasic or rubber insert for when they are not in use, although I am not sure how they would hold up to the elements or what you would do with them when the V-Lock was in use. As for clothing and fishing line getting entangled in the V-Lock, I think because of the semi-flush design it is actually less likely than if you used all the original single purpose mounting bracket from _______ (RAM, Scotty, Atwood, Magma, etc.).
