  1. Back when I lived in Montana, all I did was call Les Schwab and they'd send a truck out with the replacement tires for my truck. No standing around in the showroom bs'ing with the sales help. No dickering about the price. For my old Dodge V10 which ate tires every 30,000 miles up there, I switched to Kelly CSR's and when I made the trip to Panama they were in good shape. Now have 62,540 miles on them last week and the truck has 241,000 miles on it and still going strong pulling my Shamrock. The commercial trucks all had been switched from Toyos to Kelly KHLA's and were still on the rig - two years later.
  2. Seems to me the USCG has lost control to the EPA. I would naturally assume they had a safety inspection earlier this year as part of their annual checkups. So, who is pulling the strings now? This wouldn't have happened in the first place if the BP bean counters had allowed Halliburton to correctly cement the well in February. Instead, you have a mish-mash of Federal bureaucrats all pointing fingers. Not to get off the subject, but why is Obama telling a private company when they should give their shareholders a dividend? He did it with BP and now RIG (TransOcean). The spin doctors in the "oval" would have you believe he got his wish from BP - but in fact the notice from London was a week ago that the dividend would be suspended as the company's value was half of two months ago. Now he wants RIG to do the same. It's not his business to tell business - esp a foreign business what and who they can pay.
  3. has not set their status

  4. That's pretty much what I thought too. Old salt here - said - fore to ride out ahead of the waves, another said aft over the engine room. My ole buddy from Chicago who rides the ore boats - said to stay away from either end. My motorsailors need a tall doghouse to see 20m to the bow. Thanks - finally I get a real answer.
  5. I currently build wood motorsailors 15-20m, from my deceased Dad's designs - he was an architect. But since I'm not I thought I'd put up a simple poll for other opinions. This is a ship 30-40m. Choice of building materiel is steel with aluminum for the pilothouse. It will have twin CAT 3516's and Azimuth pods.
  6. This is not about where the cabin is going to be located on a ship we are considering to build. This is about where the pilothouse should be located for the smoothest ride. Noise is always a problem that we've solved. We'd like your opinion on this subject. I tried doing it on another "reel" forum, but all I got was grief.
  7. SHIMANO AMERICAN CORPORATION News Release Media contact: John Mazurkiewicz/Catalyst Marketing – 574/289-1331 – jpmazurk@ameritech.net MS Word document also attached For Immediate Release – 10/5/09 FEDS TO 60 MILLION AMERICAN ANGLERS: WE DON’T NEED YOU IRVINE, Calif. USA – October 5, 2009 – A recently published administration document outlines a structure that could result in closures of sport fishing in salt and freshwater areas across America. The White House created an Interagency Oceans Policy Task Force in June and gave them only 90 days to develop a comprehensive federal policy for all U.S. coastal, ocean and Great Lakes waters. Under the guise of ‘protecting’ these areas, the current second phase of the Task Force direction is to develop zoning which may permanently close vast areas of fishing waters nationwide. This is to be completed by December 9, 2009. Dave Pfeiffer, President of Shimano American Corporation explained, “In spite of extensive submissions from the recreational fishing community to the Task Force in person and in writing, they failed to include any mention of the over one million jobs or the 6o million anglers which may be affected by the new policies coast to coast. Input from the environmental groups who want to put us off the water was adopted into the report verbatim – the key points we submitted as an industry were ignored.” Recreational fishing generates a $125 billion annual economy in the United States and supports jobs in every state according to government figures. Through the Sport Fish Restoration program, anglers have provided more than $5 billion through excise taxes on fishing tackle to fishery conservation and education for decades. In addition to the economic aspects, anglers lead the nation in volunteer conservation efforts on behalf of improving fish habitat, water quality and related environmental areas. “There was no mention of the fishery conservation efforts which anglers have led for over 50 years in every state – an environmental success story that has no equal in the world”, said Phil Morlock, Director, Environmental Affairs for Shimano. “The Task Force did not make any distinction between the dramatic differences between harmful commercial fishing harvest methods and recreational fishing, even though we spelled it out for them in detail,” added Morlock. Claiming to be the result of a public consultation process the report states, “Having considered a broad range of public comments, this report reflects the requests and concerns of all interested parties.” The original White House memo and not surprisingly the Task Force report contains multiple references to developing a national policy where Great Lakes and coastal regions are managed, “consistent with international law, including customary international law as reflected in the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea” - a 300-page treaty the U.S. has never ratified. “We question what implications there will be for state authority and jurisdiction in the Great Lakes and coastal regions if the U.S. adopts the U.N. Treaty,” said Pfeiffer. The report makes it clear that future authority for implementing the policy for coastal and inland waters will fall under White House jurisdiction with a new National Ocean Council comprised of over 20 federal agencies at Cabinet Secretary or Deputy Secretary level. No reference to Congressional jurisdiction is indicated. “This significant change in U.S. policy direction is the result of a 90-day fire drill process as ordered by the President that, not surprisingly, lacks balance, clarity and quality in the end product,” said Morlock. “People who simply want to take their kids fishing on public waters deserve better from their government,” he added. Shimano is joining with other members of the recreational fishing industry to urge anglers to contact their members of Congress and the administration to request this process be required to adopt the economic, conservation and social contributions of recreational fishing as key elements of the policy. It is critical that we ensure Congressional oversight and state jurisdiction and management continues. E-letters can be sent to the administration and members of Congress by visiting http://www.keepamericafishing.org/oceantaskforce.html The future of fishing is in your hands.
  8. As always informative. Any experience with the Torsa' or Tyrnos besides replacing the levers?
  9. Very close to the boat - we keep them on 2nd wake behind the boat.
  10. I changed the wire on the downriggers to Spectra - damn that stuff is $$$$$. Anyway - we can get down 900ft without any problems and run a Black's release off the weight and a couple of rubber band releases 20m apart on the main line to other rods. Tie the cyalume stick in btwn the rubber band releases. The three rods set up are 50's with 25m back to the big squids. Another choice outfit is Krystal elect rod and reel. Floss to the weight and a 100m top shot to the squid. Tie off your cyalume stick about 20m above the weight. When the strike comes on 16/0 Owner circle hook, hit the button. Unhook the ball and fight the fish. Personally I prefer the free lines on the riggers and stand up tackle. At least that's what we're using down here. Heard they got a 197 Pumpkin Swordie at B&M's last Friday.
  11. Fine for a small dog. For the Great Pyr - a beach is better. For the cat - a litter box in the shower.
  12. First - You're bucking a Federally mandated law Second - It's the EPA you need to address Third - It's Congress that approved it Most likely it will be dismissed without predjudice by a lower court. Since the law was passed by Congress as part of the Clean Air Act in 1990 this is what you are up against. Ethanol is one of the replacement additives for MTBE which is a known carcinogen. It is created for use in highway vehicles, but has been expanded to include marine applications. Everyone wants cleaner air - http://www.epa.gov/air/caa/ A good friend of mine just replaced his Chevy boat engine with a flex-fuel 4.7 which burns E85. Every item on the engine and fuel lines was specifically built for E85 use, which means it is overbuilt to withstand the corrosive effects of the fuel. I am sorry that you're having problems with older engines and fuel systems with the meager E10. The idea is to get those older units off the road and the water. I just read somewhere, the Feds are putting up $4500 to get those smog peddlers off the road? Seems like a good idea to me. Maybe they'll trickle it down to boat owners too. You never know.
  13. What the "heck" is going on with this, the supposedly largest line mfgr in the world? I have no confidence in this day and age of computerization - in ANY company that could not or would not communicate better.
  14. Regardless of the UPS - yes we contested it and no we have not heard back from the company - all correspondence has ceased. Amex has reflected the charge back. "I put out feelers to Maxima and Ande this week." Maxima responded first, so they get the order and at a better price!
  15. We've already contested it with Amex and they had not received a response from Pure as of last week. So now I need to find another line manufacturer for our specific needs. I put out feelers to Maxima and Ande this week. Instead of you guys worrying about who can issue the UPS labels and tracking numbers, I thought you'd have some info about Berkley's operation and WHY they aren't shipping. I wonder how many dealers are having the same problem?
