  1. I've been in a few discussions regarding alternate fuel for home generators. The feedback I've gotten on that subject indicates that propane and natural gas do not have the same BTU's per volume as diesel or gasoline. If these alternates fuels are cheap in your area then they may be viable for for you from an economy point of view even if you use a lot more volume of fuel. A major advantage propane has over gasoline is that it will never go stale. Good luck!
  2. (4.35 metres is just a tad over 14ft) You'd really want to pick your days carefully if you are crossing. Until you get comfortable with it stay on the same side as your tow rig so if you have to put in somewhere, it's easier to recover it. Good luck!
  3. Don't heat it to much. You might draw the temper out of it. Like Sunbury suggested, drill around the wedge to take the pressure off and tap out the old shaft.
  4. I got this on another forum I belong too but it says the numbers aren't verified. Can anyone here do better? http://www.piranha.com/motor_specs.php?id=5515 Thanks!
  5. Merc '94, 40 HP ELPTO, Max RPM's? After a couple years in storage I thoroughly prepped my boat and took the family for some rides on Lake Winnisquam, last week. The motor sounded well but did not hit the speeds I expected and seemed quieter than I expected at full throttle. Some of my passengers were a bit heavy but I've had similar loads in the past. Fresh fuel. New hoses. Filters are clear (see through). Connections are tight. No crap in carb bowls. I'm planning on selling the boat so I've been spending lot of spare time on it. The family tours were just a fringe benefit of that work. It was not just a "shake off the cover and go" prep. I'm going to hook it to a test-tach and adjust some of the settings. Does anyone here know the maximum RPM's for this model of motor? Thanks in advance!
  6. I was reading a news site that spoke with some of the jurors. If I understand it right, the DA did not explain the significanse of several items of evidence. Like what was the point trying to be made about chloroform? The State never said if chloroform was found in the remains in higher amounts than natural or if anyone actually bought any. Sounds like a sick reason for aquital just because a lawyer doesn't finish connecting the dots... I'd probably vote the same way though if they just threw techno-geek-speak around and would not take another 30 seconds to say why it should matter to me.
  7. I think a lanyard is a good idea. Unlike a seat-belt or motor-cycle helmet, it functions to directly safeguard people outside the operators vehicle. For those single-handed charter operators something like an auto-tether would provide the flexibility they need to shift between helm and passengers.
  8. When you're on the boat or doing boat's business you are entitled to be addressed as "Captain." It's just a courtesy title though. Some people get off on it, but really it's just a nautical way of saying "Hey you, boat operating person!" Unless... The boat is a tender belonging to another vessel. Then the title is "Coxswain." If you have a license you can use it instead of Mr/Miss/Mrs (etc...) in any social situation. The exception to that is if you have a license that says "Captain" but perform a different function on the vessel, then it's bad etiquetted to be addressed as "Captain." my 2cents
  9. Those frequencies will eventually be released for use by another technology. It is unlikely the Loran equipment will be adaptable to that function. A "Ham" operator might be able to salvage components or modify it to another legal purpose. You can list it on "Craigslist" 'FREE' or "Electronics' sections and if no bites, then dispose of it as solid waste.
  10. There are "Dummmies" & "Idiot's" books on boats and buying boats. If you can't find one through your local library the any major bookstore that doesn't have them in stock will be able to order copies for you. Bring a 'boater' friend with you when you check out boats. Tell the friend in advance you are bringing them to help ID problems and to keep their eyes open. Debrief them after the session so they won't feel inhibitted. Resist the urge to make a counter-offer or commitment during the first inspection. When you find a deal that apeals to you, try to get a marine surveyor to look at it. Also post some details here. You will get differing opinions but someone may say something about the boat you haven't thought of. Lastly, request a 'sea trial.' This is normally an up or down step and many sellers will ask for a deposit before the sea-trial which is non-refundable if you don't commit to the purchase withing a specified period. Take your time. Boats are bought much faster than they are sold. Good luck!
  11. That's the downside of having wicked smart members. People start a post when they need to know something but most of us don't have many gaps left in our knowledge. For that reason there are fewer follow-up responses. We need to attract more idiots.
  12. One morning when I woke up... Nothing hurt. No aches, pains or twinges. Nothing snapped, creaked or popped. I thought I was dead!
