Boat Cleaning

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I have spent the last week or so cleaning my boat from top to bottom and have found some products that work exceptionally well! I thought I would give a quick run-down to help save others some time. It all started with an inquiry to have someone detail my boat.... I quickly found that I did not want to spend $3-400+ dollars to have my boat detailed. This wasn't a ridiculous price but I would just rather spend the money on gas and know I did it myself...

1.Waterline stains = a product called hull off/hull and bottom cleaner. The stuff is magic, orange stains wipe off with very little "elbow grease"

2.Dock rash= Acetone. I know this stuff is harsh, used very sparingly and removed all black stains from hull.

3.wax-polish= 3M Marine Restorer & Wax ( green label) for "Heavily Oxidized Fiberglass Finishes".

My hull/deck hadn't been waxed and buffed out in at least 2 years other than usual soap cleaning. WOW boat looks better than when I bought it.

4. Bright work= WOODY WAX WOODY WAX WOODY WAX!!!!!!! WOW I cannot stress how easy this stuff is and how great it works! My T-BAG on my T-top had apparently created some pitting from negligence on my part to remove it occasionally and clean the stainless... You spray it on a cloth, wipe it on and come back and wipe it off, no scrubbing needed and the harder the stain= the longer you leave it on. It is even safe for non-skid decks and corrosion prevention. I do not know what is in the bottle but is is really impressive stuff. I even used it on a polished stainless sink in a bathroom at my house which had previously been avoided due to the pain it is to clean it. Now it is spotless and water stains are a non-event.

Disclaimer: I am in no way telling you to pour any of this stuff on your skin, sniff it, or add it to your favorite beverage and drink it. Some of the products I used were fairly strong and extreme care was taken in their application! Rubber gloves are not a bad idea. Please use you head when using these products.

Hope this helps narrow the search for what works!

P.S. I picked up most of these products from River Supply in Thunderbolt GA.

PD

I've got some serious grease/oil stains on my non-skid and hull - from my hands and feet during recent engine work. Neither car wash, typical soap products, nor Barkeeper's Friend will get the stains out. Any help will be appreciated.

The hull is also very dull and flaky. What's the least expensive and best way to prepare the hull and then wax - without having to buff?

Thanks.

If your hull is "dry & flaky" you need to compound it. Unless you've done this before, hire a pro to do the job.

After they've restored the finish, apply a protective coating of a good quality polymer polish such as Star brite Premium Marine Polish with PTEF to keep it looking good.

Try Nauticalease products, they are terrific. Best cleaners I've ever used.

For grease and oil stains I have used SD-20. Spray on and within a few seconds wipe off. This will strip the wax but will take away all the oily finger prints for any repair you have done. Just make sure to do a good wax job after your done.

For the stains tru Tuf Enuf. Great stuff! Here's a link
